BISD CORE TEACHERS TO GET MANDATORY ESL CERTIFICATION

(Ed.'s Note: Add one more mandate for core subject teachers in the Brownsville Independent School District. Now, by state edict to be enforced by the BISD administration, all core area subjects (English, reading, math, science and social studies) will be required to have ESL certification.

In emails sent to all teachers, they are told that the newly-passed requirements for the 2018-2019 school year mandate the certification. Although the last sentence in the email is not clear, it appears that teachers who pass the certification will be reimbursed for the exam fee. There have been some negative responses to the edict in some high schools, and the dust hasn't settled yet.)

Not a big deal. Any certified teacher should be able to pass the exam. The district is committed to reimbursing the cost of the exam; therefore, it comes at no expense to the teachers and certification as requires by state guidelines is added to their resume. If you teach in South Texas, regardless of the subject content, teachers use ESL in their instruction.

*waiting for that numbnuts who always complains about teachers getting three months off to reply to this*

Some fool who probably couldn't even pass high school, let alone get a college degree. Unmitigated jackass.

Another new smoke screen to hide the truth vote them all out.

Should not be a problem for the BISD.
Although it is well known that in most all of the current ESL classes as soon as the door closes there is not a word spoken in English...

In the BISD an ESL class is where students can feel comfortable in knowing that they can speak only Spanish with out having some Anglo teacher trying to get them to speak English.

Good luck with that...

What happens if you are an "old timer", your certificate says LIFE, you are certified in ESL (back in the day- The certificate says ESL endorsement high school.

Blame this on Gov. Abbott and the legislature and Ruben Cortez who serves on the State Board of Education. This is a mandate by the state for all Texas teachers, so don't go blaming BISD for this. Ask and research if all charter school teachers will also be required to do this. Give us data that is real and not gossip or bitching by teachers who will not do anything extra to become better educators and earn additional certification. Son arastrados y nomas hacen los menos que pueden hacer. Den gracias que tienen trabajo.

BISD is misinterpreting the law. It doesn't say ALL core teachers have to get certified, just those that handle EL (formerly ESL) students.

Mr. Montoya: BISD has A LOT more problems that having teachers not certified in ESL.
Ask the old people that go to the aquatic place to exercise how "warm" is the water in the pool (FREEZING!), ask principals in the old schools how many EMPTY classrooms they have because their student population has DECREASED and is now at IDEA. IDEA will open a new elementary level school on Robindale. How many more students will go there? I know of at least 3 old elementary schools where there is an avg. of 3 to 4 EMPTY classrooms. That is about 250 less students, but hey, there is a new score board with a million dollar WASTE so a few can put money in the pocket.
We should NOT vote Democrat or Republican; we should VOTE for the person, their platform and what he/she brings with them.
It is not a problem of Democrat vs. Republican or Mexican vs. gringo. It is about laziness, FLOJERA, HUEVONADA. Waiting for others to do what WE are responsible doing: SPEAK UP, DONT insult, curse or disrespect; just tell the truth and, if you are a citizen, REGISTER, VOTE, and use that tool as the best weapon to throw inept government, including those in education, OUT.

to 7.47 am, I agree with you 100%, IDEA is eating everybody's lunch not just BISD all over the Rio Grande Valley area plus up state, so my question is very simple, does IDEA have a better product? Many people think so and that is why they are expanding all over the place and local school districts like BISD are on the losing end, but then I have never read or heard one of the BISD trustees, especially Joe Rodriguez aka el 10% commission trustee ever address any issues like this one or any other, so Folks its time to think about CHANGE and VOTE THESE SCUMBAGS OUT.

So you have become a Troll now, it feels good when you can reply to a post.

Anonymous at 7:28 PM: An ESL test is NOT in Spanish, it does NOT ask the teacher must speak Spanish. ESL means that YOU (the teacher) is able to teach English to NON speakers. I have a friend, who is white (Anglo) does NOT speak Spanish or Cantonese (Chinese), she moved to China, is teaching English to Chinese and attends evening classes to learn Chinese.
Back in the 1990's I taught ESL in the public school (not in the system anymore), you DON'T SPEAK SPANISH to the students, you MAKE the student speak English. Your success is what makes you an ESL teacher.

The "White Horse" is coming (You can't stop him) and the organization and how things work and people who work there at BISD, will change exceptionally. Rightfully so, needs to be done.

If you stand in your back yard every time it rains singing "Singin' in the Rain" with your unadulterated brain and full "OF" enthusiasm, your neighbors will eventually call the police.

If you didn't pass HS how can you get a college degree? You are the true example of a BISD teacher with an unadulterated brain. A cupcake has more intellectual fictus.

With those three months vacation with pay you should have gone back to school and retaken English 101 or use your ancestral instinct and listen to your grandma. I take it back you can’t find a coconut in a Coconut Island.

I wonder how you proved you're not a robot?

The real reason is BISD does not want to pay an ESL teacher who services year 1 & 2 students. BISD is trying to cut corners because it is losing so many students. Since all teachers will be certified, they will really throw year 1 & 2 student into the pool to sink or swim. Just like when they started pushing for teachers to be Generalist certified. It was only for principals to be able to move teachers anywhere they “need” to. So when numbers started dropping, principals began to get rid of teachers who were highly experienced in their subject with teachers new to the subject. Many “generalist” have been moved to a different subject yearly. The district of innovation is watering down your child education.

In the BISD, ESL classes are 99% Spanish......

PSJA has this type of programming for dual language learners in the classroom and there's been lots of touted success from each learning cohort for college readiness. I say this is an excellent move.

So what's the big deal you huevones have THREE months to study and you get paid. ALWAYS complaining just like that pendejo at September 17, 2018 at 1:48 PM thinking he's in russia or china, where they assassinate people that protest. I just hope he's not a teacher. "PENDEJO"

"couldn't even pass high school, let alone get a college degree" I hope this idiota is not a teacher. I know you can attend or enroll in a higher education institute but you need either a ged or hs diploma. What this idiota is insinuating is that you can attend college without a hs or ged. I just wonder HOW he learned to use the word "Unmitigated"?
The other word is easy he just needs to look at a mirror...

THREE MONTHS OFF WITH PAY IS A SCAM NOBODY BUT NOBODY IN THE UNIVERSE DOES THIS!!! "NOBODY" IT'S A RIP OFF TO THE TAXPAYERS...
"Oh but is a contract". "BULLSHIT" THREE MONTHS IS THREE MONTHS"PERIOD"...
