It will be more than two years since a car driven by a Sugar Land woman plowed into a crowd of pedestrians on Spring Break at south Padre Island, hitting six of them and killing one, 19-year-old Maria Selena Patino of Los Fresnos.
Now, after numerous delays and continuances, a clearly annoyed 445th District Judge Gloria Rincones has ordered that announcements be made Wednesday, April 17 and jury selection begin April 22.
Reports indicate that her defense attorney Ernesto Gamez asked for a brief continuation to announce whether they were ready for trial because Gamez and the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office are working on a possible plea deal.
Assistant District Attorney Patrick Rodriguez confirmed to the court that the DA’s Office is working with Gamez on a possible plea deal.
"This case has been on the docket for more than two years and we're not going to wait any longer," Rincones told the defense and prosecutors.
Investigators believe Daisy Jo Decker was intoxicated when she drove her car into the crowd, according to a statement released then by the South Padre Island Police Department.
In December, Decker pleaded not guilty to a nine-count indictment that includes a charge of intoxicated manslaughter.
Decker is being represented by local attorney Ernesto Gamez.
