Four South Texas schools from McAllen and Brownsville cracked the national chess competition ceiling this past weekend at the 2019 National Elementary Championship held in Nashville, Tenn.

The ratings came in the K-5 category competition and had the Blanca Sanchez Elementary from McAllen  come in at 7th place, Garden Park in 8th, Hudson Elementary at 9th, and Americo Paredes Elementary closing off the category in 21st place.

Garden Park Elementary principal Victor Caballero said that his K-5 team realized that the competition at the national level would be stiffer than they had at the regional and state level where they rose to the top.

"I told them that they were the top dogs at the regional and state levels, but that they should realize that at this level they were the little puppies," he said. "This is where the competition is stiffer than ever."

The McAllen school team was composed of Benjamin and Gael Membrilla, Emily Ham, and Gael Guerra.

The Garden Park School team was composed of Sebastian Baez, Anthony Nicholas John, Michael Brody John, Jose Ramirez, Jesus I. Ibarra, Natalie Michelle John, and Santiago Hernandez.

The Hudson Elementary team was composed of Felix Saldivar Jr., Gael Gonzalez, Juan P. Blanco Jr., and Frida Gomez.

Congratulations to Garden Park, Hudson and Paredes! These students will never forget this accolade. I am certain they could care less for all the personal fights within the school district. Maybe the board will do something special for these students if Minerva feels they can afford to spend the money.

The awards for chess are great. Time to build on chess, soccer, music and move on to high achievement in academics too. Time to quit being satisfied with "dog paddling" and move on to swimming in this national pool. Unfortunately, most parents in this community just want day care and feeding.
