Special to El Rrun-Rrun
The Community Development Corporation of Brownsville's first “Back to School Block Party” to give out free school supplies and refreshments for children who attend the event generated huge interest among resident who attended from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.
The CDCB hosted the event is in partnership with more than 50 organizations such as Brownsville Public Library, IBC, Gladys Porter Zoo, United Way, Pronto Insurance, H-E-B, Texas Southmost College and Brownsville Public Utilities Board. It was held on 9th street between Levee and Elizabeth (next to Community Development).
There was a DJ, animals from the Gladys Porter Zoo, frozen "bolis" and 1,000 free hot dogs.
Other components in Harlingen and Raymondville have a back to school party, but Brownsville was missing one. Community members who attended the event not only got free school supplies and food, but also got to know all the different services available for them.

Brownsville turns out for anything "free," but not to vote! smh
Thank you to all who donated and helped out with this effort, good to see something positive in the Brownsville community for a change.
Money well spent
Jim Barton was there getting free stuff for his grandson. smh
Johnny too late Brownsville.
Do a story about the guy who went to Comissioner court to educate Guz Ruiz on the 1st amendment hilarious
Juan, would you check up on a homeless man who is under the expressway at International Blvd and Frontage. He sits there all day, in the heat and sun and completely sunburned and doesn't move. Tex Dot Mowed around him yesterday and did nothing. I call HELP and was told that nothing could be done about it because he was not nude. I called it in as a Welfare Check on him for if no one checks on him he will be dead in a couple of days. He needs medical help and psychological help, food water, and shelter. Where is Sister Norma now
and the guy from Good Neighbor. Can you address this with Chief Sauceda since the guy who answered the phone gave me the impression that he turns in only the concerns he figures deserve attention.
Totally agree with Anonymous July 31 at 12:10 PM. I bet half of those people don't even need it. They just take it cause it's free. Just like they abuse the welfare system instead of working. Pongense a trabajar!
@10:04pm...If you need Montoya to do something about it, you need to email him and send pics if you can. He doesn't read comments or answers them either.
This is not about how much people can afford or not afford. This is about ensuring the children have the appropriate supplies to be successful in school. In the end, this effort impact the community as a whole. Some people are just going to complaint about everything.....browntown snowflakes.
Its the racist republicans that are always complaining about every thing not the locals
The children do not have school supplies but wear $100 tennis shoes and all carry a cell phone and other objects. Parents load up the shopping cart with 24 packs and the kid cries for a box of colors and is yelled at for being a pain. Something is wrong.
