H-E-B announced late Tuesday that it will close its downtown Brownsville store forever on Oct. 20.
The downtown landmark at 924 E. Elizabeth St. was built in 1958 and is one of the San Antonio-based company’s oldest locations. The company said in a press release that the location is being shuttered due to the need for “extensive renovations.”
Javier Avalos, H-E-B group vice president and general manager for the border region, said the company “will continue to operate stores and be an important resource in Brownsville.”
“We remain committed to our strong community partnerships in Brownsville and we will continue to invest in our stores, and plan to introduce and expand innovative services to better serve our customers in the area,” he said.
H-E-B also has Brownsville locations on Boca Chica Boulevard, Central Boulevard, Paredes Line Road and Southmost Boulevard. The company said it is committed to ensuring a smooth transition for the downtown store’s nearly 60 employees, “who will be offered equivalent positions with opportunities for growth and advancement at nearby stores.” The company said it has nearly 1,100 employees in Brownsville.

The HEB on the picture is the one that was rebuilt after the first one burned to the ground around 1956. I can remember running over with the neighborhood kids to watch the big fire standing on the stairs of the post office. All we could smell were "bar-b-qued' meat and the firemen decided that they needed to save the cigarettes and were throwing cigarettes out into the streets. I want a pack of ribs instead, even after they were burned.
Sad but real. The HEB on Elizabeth catered mostly to the Matamoros crowd and the residents of apartments and houses two or three blocks away.
When the Walmart at Amigoland closed, the customers took the bus to the one in Boca Chica . The same will be when the downtown HEB closes. The HEB in Mcallen 10th street has been closed for over 3 yrs and Reynosa residents take the bus further down. Remember the Kroger stores? They still exist! just not in Brownsville. The building should be renovated, sold or demolish. It will be a downtown danger if not.
Juan, great grocery reporting! People, I go to McAllen for the best HEB experience. Better food, people. More attractive people, people! LMAO

Who wants to lay down odds the city will end up overpaying for the building by about three times its value, tearing it down, and turning it into a parking lot for all the bureaucrats and pencil pushers who work at city hall?
It really is a pity this historic HEB is closing. It's a pity the elderly residents of the "high rise" and other downtown residents will have to go elsewhere for their groceries.
Just another change as time passes. The downtown HEB was no longer cost effective to keep it open. So, we have another abandoned building downtown. To big for any of the law dollar outfits that cater to the walk accross Mexican trade.
Closing of this H.E.B. will have a negative impact on lots of businesses that people must pass going to buy groceries. The grocery store is a major attraction downtown. Most of the people who go downtown are not looking for Dodici's and other new business. They are there to buy groceries and cheap shit that is sold in various shops. This closing will make a difference downtown.
Anybody want to start up a plasma center?
I heard Sacks Fifth Avenue is already looking at it.
Built in 58 and the picture has cars that date in the early 40s and maybe 30s. Que pasa juanito...
Shows you how our downtown is NOT thriving! Total waste of money to invest in downtown. No one in Brownsville goes to downtown much less anyone else from any other place not named Matamoros. The money is made on the north side of town, plain and simple, people love Chili’s more than any other local restaurant.
Not surprise what do you expect when we have inept, stupid dumboRATAS leadership who do jack SHIT to improve our economy, attract new industries, cut regulations , etc. , etc. That's why we're the POOREST CITY IN THE COUNTRY IN THE STATE OF TEXAS WITH THE 10TH LARGEST ECONOMY IN THE WORLD!!!!
These idiot demonRATAS are more concern in reducing our traffic lanes to accommodate THIRD WORLD BIKE LANES. OR WHAT OTHER CHI CHI HANDOUTS GIMMICK THEY CAN CONCOCT FOR ALL THE MEXICAN MAMONES THAT ARE ALWAYS IN THE HUNT FOR FREEBIES AND AT THE SAME TIME THESE IDIOT DUMBOCRATS GREASE THEIR OWN POCKETS!!!!
YEP OUR TAX DOLLARS REALY INVESTED WISELY!!!!!!
THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU KEEP VOTING FOR DUMBOCRATS!!!!
Boboso racist republican
juan if the City folks including the new city manager mr know it all were a little bright they could ask the ahaaeb company up in San Antonio headquarters to donate the land and building and turn it into a parking lot, city would only pay for the demolition or so it yourself. HEB builds as close to the welfare cockroaches as possible to get that government money; they love to build close to Section Eight housing.
You mean cockroach Europeans and hillbillies your favorites third and fouth generation welfare recipients.
where will i pick up the prostis now?
Storage facility for the BHS to store all the Hispanic trinkets
so the voicespot.blog doesnt realize that even the paredes lune road and fm 802 HEB is across the street from government subsidized housing.
Most of the residents in those apartments are from matamorroos they show their keys to customs to cross the bridge.
The COB has remained silent on this horrific blow to our community. Not a word from them. It must be another COB inside deal? Probably another Nurith Galonsky scam.
trump is going to built a tower to watch the river
Los piojos don't vote can not even imagine a gringa representing los piojos what happened to the promise that she was going to pick up ALL the stray dogs and cats? She's buying the HEB to re-sell to the city just imagine the profits!!! Y LOS PIOJOS QUE EATING BEANS....
