STATE: CAMERON COUNTY STILL BEDEVILED WITH JAIL WOES

By Erin Sheridan
Staff Writer
Brownsville Herald

A series of inspections done by state authorities at the Cameron County detention centers detailed violations in the maintenance of life safety equipment and cell supervision over the course of five years.

The inspections took place in November 2019, September 2018, January 2018, October 2016, September 2015, and October 2014. Officials from the Texas Commission on Jail Standards arrive at the facilities unannounced and conduct walk-throughs to determine if the jail is up to health and safety standards.

The commission also conducts checks on employee protocol to ensure that proper policies are being followed while supervising inmates.

According to Sheriff Omar Lucio, the various compliance failures are the result of different inspectors, some with different levels of experience, as well as changing laws that he feels the department tries its best to keep up with.

One violation that was documented multiple times over the course of inspections was the failure of jail staff to maintain life safety equipment — namely the detention center’s fire panel.

In October of this year, the panel at Carrizales-Rucker was red tagged for having eight different trouble alarms. Lucio told The Brownsville Herald in November that the part had been ordered and was ready to be installed.

The jail is still listed as non-compliant on the commission’s website. Lucio said on Wednesday that the department has done all necessary updates and paperwork and is waiting on a follow-up inspection, which will take place in March.

The last inspection date on another fire panel’s tags — this time at the old county jail located at 954 E. Harrison Street in Brownsville — was listed in the November report as being tagged Oct. 19, 2018, exactly one year prior.

juan great timing for these issues to being brought up by you and the broow herald. So if the fire panel is not working where does a concern citizen or the public file a complaint with? With the County fire Marshal? Will that even work or will they just brush us off? Looks like some serious problems at the jail for many years not just recently. Sheriff lucio open your eyes and mind. or simply just RETIRE if you cant handle the package, spent some time with the grandkids. It looks like the Reyna boys are not doing their job either. Perhaps NEW BLOOD is really needed all the way around the sheriff dept after all. Just saying.

Trump parties with wealthy at Mar-A-Lago on New Year's Eve: Trump wouldn't be caught dead socializing with the dumb SOBs that populate his hillbilly rallies, scurrying for his attention. Unless they're vendors he can cheat, Trump U students he can con or undocumented employees he can exploit, Trump has no use for them.

Our jail fails inspection because of the lack of leadership from Omar Lucio and the Reyna Brothers. Lucio is incompetent, as are the Reyna Brothers. They are not public servants, they are "public leeches" who need to be burned off the skin of the Cameron County taxpayers. It is time for change in 2020 and getting rid of Omar Lucio and the Reynas should be on the top of our change list.

It's not "jail woes", its Sheriff and Chief Deputy woes in Cameron County. Omar Lucio and Gus Reyna are corrupt and as "crooked as a cork screw". No one will ever know how much they have corrupted the jail system, the Sheriff's Office and Democratic Politics in Cameron County. Time to get rid of Omar Lucio and Gus Reyna. Stop the bleeding in Cameron County.

We need new leadership. New blood. Too bad that the new blood is perhaps same old, same old. The curse of living in Brownsville.

The abuse at the County Jail continues by employee favortism, allowing employees to work overtime when not justified, and the continous waste of slots on employees that don't actually work. The employees who are related to others in rank.

U.S. kills Iranian military chief: Trump tweeted back in 2012 that Obama would start a war with Iran to elevate his poll numbers. So now we know Trump thinks being a war president will pay off for him. Like so many other things, Trump miscalculates the attitudes of Americans. There is no US foreign policy under Trump. Just fires Trump lights and the gasoline he pours on them when he wants to change the subject from his crimes.

Add fajitas to the list of inadequate supervision.

All of these recent Panson Barton comments are from the insecure, race-baiting Duardo.

Where are the Republicans when you need them? Puro DemocRATA.

No, Hasse and Blevins are gentlemen, not internet trolls like the McAllen shut-in. It's Duardo polluting the blogosphere with juvenile race-baiting.

OK LETS GET THIS FOR THE RECORD. THE SHERIFF DOES NOT EVEN GO INTO THE JAIL. BEFORE THE INSPECTORS GO TO VISIT THE JAIL THEY LET THE JAIL KNOW THEY ARE COMING SO THIS GIVES THEM ENOUGH TIME TO PREPAIR THE JAIL FOR INSPECTION AND THEY STILL FAIL. THE JAIL IS IN BAD SHAPE. AND FOR THE ONE WHO SAID JOE ELIZARDI IS A GOOD SUPERVISOR, REALLY HE IS A JOKE ALONG WITH SAM SANCHEZ AND GEORGE HERNANDEZ, AND ALL THE CRONIES. THEY DONT EVEN CONTROL THE JAIL. THEY ARE AFRAID OF THE INMATES, THEY ALWAYS HAVE RIOTS AND LETS NOT FORGET THE INMATES WHO GET BEAT DOWN BECAUSE THE STAFF ARE LAZY. YOU ALL NEED TO OPEN YOUR EYES.
