OUTSIDE: PLAGUE, STRIFE; INSIDE: SANCTUARY, CONFESSIONS

(Ed.'s Note: With the doors of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral closed to prevent transmittal of the COVID-19 virus among believers, Fr. Michael Amesse prays before his outside confessional booth. The priest said he is offering outside confessions until 11 a.m. each morning for the duration of the city lockdown prohibiting the congregating of  more than 10 people in restaurants, bars, businesses or churches and social and bingo halls.)

Thank you Father Michael for all you do for our community. We regret that you will be leaving us this summer. Stay safe during this tough period, during which you are making yourself available to the people.

Maybe the St. Joe's parents and their "children" will atone for their sins of omission.

The Trump Republicans and Moscow Mitch are doing what they know how to do. They have no idea how to govern. But when it comes to giving more money to the wealthy in this country and big corporations like the failed Trump tax cut did, the Trump Republicans led by Moscow Mitch want to do it again. No protective gear for healthcare providers to help the sick. No ventilators to help the sick. No testing kits to know where this disease is and who is infected in this country. But give big Corp and the wealthy more money the Trump Republicans and Moscow Mitch are behind it 100 percent.

His administration has not to date covered itself in glory. Homeland security experts have been rightly critical of his administration’s response on multiple fronts, ranging from failure to prepare a comprehensive testing regime to refusing to use the powers of the federal government to coordinate the state-by-state responses. He has seemed indifferent at times and less than urgent about what is needed. But last week, something shifted as the full scale of the challenge the virus presents sunk in, together with the recognition that significant loss of life is not out of the question and economic wreckage is now certain. And, now, the newly scared Trump is prepared to do what he does best: Spend gobs and gobs of money.
