THEY ARE THE CHAMPIONS! GARDEN PARK, B. BRITE, PAREDES

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Three Brownsville Independent School District elementary schools took top honors in the Pre-K-5/6th grade chess competition in the 2020 Texas South State Scholastic Elementary School Chess Championships held over the weekend at the  McAllen Convention Center.

Americo Paredes, Garden Park and Ben Brite elementaries tied up with a 19.0 score to share the honors. The schools had come out on top in regional competition and this tournament was at the state level.

Now it's up to the nationals in Nashville, Tenn., this coming May 8-10. In the video above, Garden Park student body cheers on the winning team, made up of Axel Noyola, Mia L. Ramirez, Suri X. Hernandez, Oliver N. Martinez, Aveli M. Garza, Annaliz Rangel and Ariana Murillo.

Our congratulations and gratitude to these students and their teachers and administrators for providing them with the time and instruction to make the city proud of its young scholars. On to Nationals!
