A HARDY BAND; NO SUNSHINE PATRIOTS MEMORIAL DAY 2020

(Ed's Note: There were fewer of them because of the COVID-19 threat, but the hardy participants of this year's Memorial Day Silent March turned out for the trek from the HEB at the corner of Boca Chica and Central boulevards to pay their respects to America's fallen heroes. They gathered at Veterans' Park where they held a moment of silence, a prayer, and heard taps to mark the solemn occasion.)

McAllen has a very impressive memorial, much more than Brownsville's. Just saying.

Memorial Day: Freedom comes at a cost.

Seventy years ago, on June 25, 1950, forces from North Korea invaded the South. Consequently, led by the United States, the Allies responded to the North’s aggression. By the time the armistice was signed on July 27, 1953, about 37,000 U.S. service members had died to defend and secure freedom on the Korean peninsula.

Their ultimate sacrifices were not in vain. Today, the Republic of Korea stands as a testimony to their sacrifices. Without the hardships endured by U.S. military members heroically executing their duties, South Korea would have been denied the opportunity to emerge as a free nation.

Memorial Day is a time of — and for — solemnity to honor our fallen “heroes.” Over the years, we have corrupted this day of reverence into an extended holiday weekend. On Memorial Day, we should remember the valuable lesson of the Korean War: Freedom is never free. We should take time to reflect on those brave individuals who died so we can continue to enjoy the blessings of liberty, peace and freedom.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch found that Trump’s own budget documents show the Obama Administration did leave him prepared tp fight the Coronavirus, only Trump has said the opposite ― the newspaper calling “a lie of colossal Trumpian proportions.”

The newspaper’s editorial board said the Trump administration told Congress that the Obama administration left it with everything needed for a pandemic ― and sought big budget cuts from the programs as a result.

Trump’s 2020 budget asked Congress to cut the pandemic preparedness budget by $102.9 million, part of $595.5 million in requested cuts to public health preparedness and response outlay.

“Obama left office with an unblemished record of building up the nation’s pandemic preparedness,” the newspaper said. “Trump systematically sought to dismantle it.”

When I start seeing people dividing an orgainzation by forming clubs and selling tshirts and other things to advance their club I see problems. This should NOT happen to an event like this one. I for one will not attend any more events. I will honor the vets on my own time and with out any interferance from private clubs or other organizations trying to take over.

MY RESPECTS AND TO ADD I HAD FOUR BROTHERS THAT HAVE SERVED IN ALL THE WARS FROM KOREA TO TODAY...

I see the veterans park becoming another sombrero fest event they have already built a bunch of food stands that are permanent fixtures for future events this should not happen to this park that was buult to honor the veterans not to profit from it. Who ever came up this this idea should be FIRED immediately or NOT to run for re-elction again.

President Donald Trump is putting forth a false “Choice” when he boasts about a program aimed at improving veterans’ health care by steering more patients to the private sector.

Heading toward the Memorial Day weekend, Trump bragged anew that he got the Veterans Choice program passed so veterans now can choose to go to private doctors immediately for care if they have to wait too long for appointments at government-run VA medical facilities.

But the Choice program was achieved by his predecessor, President Obama. And it is currently restricted because of the coronavirus outbreak.

It is unfortunate that the Korean War Veteran who wrote the very good piece about the sacrifices of our military in Korea had ruin it at the end. Why take a swipe at other veterans at the end. Memorial Day is to honor all the dead of all our wars and conflicts....it is not to seek to dishonor other veterans. Anyone who has whined survived. The Korean War Vet proved in the end to just be an asshole.
