Various official and semi-official sources have confirmed that Ramiro Salazar, the father of former Matamoros mayor Leticia Salazar was kidnapped this morning and that his captors are demanding $50 million pesos ransom, about $2.5 million U.S.
State government sources in Victoria, Tamaulipas' capital city, have confirmed the kidnapping of Salazar by unidentified assailants. There has been no official announcement by the Matamoros authorities or by the state police on the matter.
According to local sources, Salazar was snatched at about 7 a.m. this morning in an unspecified location in Matamoros. The demands for the ransom came just hours later, sources say.
While she was mayor, Salazar formed a paramilitary group called El Grupo Hercules to combat extortion, murders, and kidnappings. They were directly implicated in the kidnapping of three U.S. citizens and a Mexican national who were later found murdered on a country road.
Salazar denied her or El Grupo Hercules' responsibility in the kidnapping and murder of the three American and the Mexican citizen. The case remains unsolved.
