Special to El Rrun-Rrun
On the same day that more than 600 new positive COVID-19 cases were reported across the four counties in the Rio Grande Valley and Cameron County closed its beaches there, South Padre Island officials say they will open the city's beaches to outside visitors this July 4.
One death reported Tuesday in Hidalgo County was a 20-year-old. In all, 440 new positive cases were reported there overnight. Cameron County did not lag too far behind. More than 100 were reported by the Cameron County Health Department, the majority from Brownsville. Willacy reported another 105.
And Tuesday saw the arrival of 100s of health professionals from - of all places, New York - to help out the beleaguered local hospitals as hospitalizations soar across the Rio Grande Valley.
The move from the money-hungry officials t SPI comes as authorities in Los Angeles, California and Palm Beach, Florida - which have seen a spike in positive cases as has Texas - opted to forego the annual revenue stream instead of putting their populations in danger of the spreading virus.
The order issued by the city for the Fourth seems to be aimed at squeezing as much from visitors as possible. According to the order, all secondary beach chairs and umbrellas must be stored at the dune line and setup only by demand.
Chairs and umbrellas must be rented and occupied at the time of setup. Only two chairs per shade will be allowed.
Shades with a single pole must be separated by a least 15 feet from the edge of the shade structure and only two chairs will be permitted for every shade structure.
At the beginning of this crisis, during Spring Break, when Texas Gov. Greg Abbott was puffing his chest and saying Texas had "flattened" the curve and allowed the crowds to flock to the island, students from all over the state and county gathered t the local bars to party with the resultant spread of the COVID-9 across the states where they returned.
And where will the visitors to SPI this Fourth be from? You can bet the locals aren't going to be mixing it up with the visitors who will clog the Queen Isabella Causeway. They will be from Brownsville, Hidalgo COunty and surrounding counties where the virus is spreading like wildfire across the llanos. Temperatures are predicted to benear 100 Saturday.
And once they are on the city's beaches, surrounded as they are by the county's, will they be prevented from walking down the beach?
And who will enforce the county's face mask order and social distancing orders issued by County Judge Eddie Trevino who told news media he "hoped" SPI city leaders would do the right thing follow suit and close theirs? He had to know that was wishful thinking.
Instead, officials from the four counties should gird their collective loins and be ready to weather the onslaught of infection is is sure to result from this new, willful, collective thumbing of the nose at COVID-19 by SPI city officials.
The new "restrictions" by the city will conveniently remain in effect until 11:59 p.m. July 7.

FUCK THEM!
pizza pizza von crazy mcnutty
We have regressed because of people who take actions to please themselves for a moment. Let's hope it won't come back to haunt them or someone in their
family. If Trump does not use a mask, why should I? It is all a hoax as Minnie Winnie keeps says along with Trump. The beach won't go away but you
may, so wait and celebrate next year! Celebrate in your back yards with own
family.
talk about stupidity its like the virus...
Some people are throwing Covid-19 parties, a disturbing competition where people who have coronavirus attend and the first person to get infected receives a payout, local officials said.
Is this happening over at the SPI???
Nutty Buddy
juan more covid cases over at the county jail? what happen, thought omar and reyna brothers had everything under control? Que paso?
CLOWN!
Enough of the racist comments, amigo. Let's concentrate on McNutty's nuttiness. What's this clowns (McNutty) phone number. This is not a "hardy gringo" problem. It's a Valley problem. And call Abbott as well if you are concerned. I am.
What's with the racist comments. Most of the island is owned by hispanics. What Mayor McNulty did was place tight restrictions on beach goers to prevent large gatherings and insure social distancing. There is no physical way to close over 300 beach accesses in the city. The county has three or four. Judge Eddie threw you a bone. He did not close the beaches. He closed the access to vehicles. The beach is still open. Oh, by the way, if you will spend Hundreds of $$'s to park your trailer at Island Blanca Park, you can enter the park and have full access to the beach. Brownsville is exploding with COVID cases and accounts for most of the county's cases. So what does Trevino do, he closes beach accesses. How about dealing with the problems in Brownsville, Harlingen or Los Fresnos. He should start enforcing all his mandates by citing restaurants and bars that are not complying. HEB is a good example. Allowing hundreds to enter, some with no masks. But no, he closes a beach access to solve the problem. Trevino needs to grow some balls and take action where it's needed.
