MUSK: BOCA CHICA TO MARS FANS, NOT READY GRASSHOPPER

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Billionaire SpaceX owner and beachfront-resort developer Elon Musk again amazed the rubes by successfully "hopping" its SN6 Starship prototype to 500 feet at Boca Chica, 30 days after a 500-foot hop and landing on Aug. 4 by the SN5.

The SpaceX site, which is no longer operating under the original pretext that it would be "the world's only commercial vertical launch pad" completed the maneuver shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday.

So far SapceX has not made a dent in the original promises to the FAA and local residents that it would have hired hundreds (600?) of local permanent staff who would earn at least $75,000 a year.

Instead, it has been developed as a de facto rocket and space gadget testing site, with the crew out at Boca Chica going through trial and error to find the right mechanical and material mixes to put these "hoppers' up for less than a minute.

That is hardly enough time to corral the thousands of tourists eager to witness the monthly launches in Musk's original promises during a public hearing seeking FAA approval held at the old Amigoland Mall and herd them to the million-dollar amphitheater built by Cameron County on South Padre Island.

And after the 50 seconds aloft, nothing. That was not even time to pop a cold one and gawk at the smoke produced by the SN6’s single Raptor engine that was ignited at 12:48 p.m., 10 minutes after a siren was sounded warning the remaining Boca Chica Village residents who haven't caved in to Musk's strong-arm real estate strategies and sold their homes that a launch was imminent.

Then, if one had strong binoculars, it might have been visible as it "hopped" for about 50 seconds before landing on a pad adjacent to the launch stand. It was heralded as the third hop at the company’s Boca Chica Starship production complex and launch/test site. The first occurred on Aug. 27, 2019, when the first Starship prototype, dubbed “Starhopper,” flew for just under a minute before touching down.

A subsequent prototype, the SN8 will feature three engines instead of one, according to Musk, who tweeted on Aug. 11 that “SN8 will have body flaps and a nose cone.” The flaps are aerodynamic surfaces on the nose and bottom portion that control the ship’s attitude during descent.

Boca Chica to Mars seems like a long time coming.

We wait with bated breath.

When President Donald Trump canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018, he blamed rain for the last-minute decision, saying that “the helicopter couldn’t fly” and that the Secret Service wouldn’t drive him there. Neither claim was true.

Trump rejected the idea of the visit because he feared his hair would become disheveled in the rain, and because he did not believe it important to honor American war dead, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day. In a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit, Trump said, “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.” In a separate conversation on the same trip, Trump referred to the more than 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as “suckers” for getting killed.
