ATKINSON CASE: EVIDENCE SHOWS SHE WAS NOT SET UP

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Audio tapes and recorded conversations indicate that Brownsville Independent School District trustee Dr. Sylvia Atkinson being tried on bribery and conspiracy charges was not set up by Pink Ape Media ad agency owner Rodrigo Moreno, but that she had suggested to the FBI undercover agent posing as a movie producer that he be used to make it easier to push through the deal because he was a local source.

The agent, according to the recordings, had told her that his investors from India had between $50 to $60 million in capital.

At this point, Atkinson said that in Mexico, it was usual for the recipients of a grant to take 15 to 20 percent off the top before it was distributed to the schools, but that in the United States, such a large percentage would be too obvious and that she would settle for just 1 percent of the $50 million so as not to attract too much attention and "live comfortably."

Federal prosecutors say that Atkinson – with Moreno sitting at a table next to them – whispered to the undercover agent (UCA) that he not tell Moreno how much she was getting from him and to keep him in the dark on the amounts she was asking.

If you siphoned off that much, she told the UCA, you could go to jail.

A number of former BISD board members – including Cesar Lopez and Laura Perez Reyes – have testified on the details surrounding some of the charges, including the sale of computer tablets to Rio Hondo ISD.

During the diner at the swank restaurant Madeira, the UCA repeatedly asked if he had to meet with anyone else to make the deal and Atkinson repeatedly told him that she was the only one he needed to pave the way at every level.

"I'm it. You don't need to speak with anyone else. I can get it done without any problem," she said.

The same went for permits, scouting the sites in the district with a crew, and feasibility studies, prosecutors say. Moreno could be used because he was a local guy and he could disburse funds through him to keep local officials at an arm's distance from him and his investors. But as far as direct contact with him or his investors, she would remain the prime contact.

Ironically, when she was arrested August 22, 2020, the government said she offered to wear a wire to give information against 404th District Judge Elia Cornejo-Lopez for her alleged attempt to influence board members – including Perez-Reyes – to agree to settle her lawsuit against BISD in federal court.

But by then prosecutors told her, it was to late for her to report a crime or to to cut a deal. Testimony in the trial – scheduled to take 10 days – resumed today.

When will the dumbass crooked public officials learn that the FBI is down here and looking to bust any they can. The stupid people are so greedy and careless about their graft they are easy to catch. As in the Limas case it only takes one informant to catch a net full of stinking fish. Wear a wire and reel them in! These idiots think they are in Mexico where graft is open and tolerated. The local population may wink at it, but the Feds do not.

I read and read and read more each day and I still can't believe she was
stupid enough to try this and get away from it. Is this what a gambling addiction does to you? I wonder if she can have a "maquinita" in her jail
cell?

The picture, if I remember correctly, was one taken when she was caught with her hands in the cookie jar at Socorro ISD, where she was dismissed for also trying to screw them.

If she had that actual sad face, she should have used her brain and start behaing herself, but she gave it to BISD and Rio Hondo. She also tried it
at Eagle Pass and Santa Rosa.

Pobre huerca! Nunca aprendiste de lo pasado. Oh, and last night on Channel 5
they reported that she had confessed to taking bribes from Elia Cornejo Lopez.
What happened to that?

Feds have who they want Sylvia Atkinson, The rest will be gravy for them if they can get them as well. Elia Cornejo your next, you should be removed from ever holding any office. I hope you get what's coming to you. You made many teachers and school administrators life a living hell by bullying them because you held a judgeship in this county, and you should pay for all of. If not in this lifetime in the hereafter for sure.

I attended and graduated from BISD, taught for BISD all of my teaching career and am about to retire. I have worked so hard all of my life, but as time passed by, teachers have been treated worse and worse, and used to complete more and more busy work that is meant to make those above us look like they are working hard. As I get closer to the day I will retire, never before have I been treated so dismissively, flooded with more and more to do that takes our attention away from the classroom and what should be our main focus, the students. It is with a heavy heart that I say I am being pushed out with overwork, and disrespect, I still love teaching, but they are killing us with the hoops we have to jump through for the privilege of being teachers. They work us to death so that those above us can make the big bucks, along with the test making companies. That's where the money is at. We teachers are treated like garbage, by society and by educational leadership.

Let's not forget about PUB, Port of Brownsville, BEDC and other organizations, elected officials or appointed ( including City, County, State), that have made decisions to benefit themselves, their families and friends. They have become or made someone wealthier by sitting on that board they're in. It is sickening. Look in the mirror and reflect on what you've done.
