CITY HEALTH DEPARTMENT, COPS, SHUT DOWN PALM LOUNGE

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Even as Gov. Greg Abbott is considering opening up bars next Wednesday, the Brownsville Health Department inspectors swooped on the patrons of the Palm Lounge at about 7 p.m. yesterday and ordered the owners to shut down and the customers to leave.

The customers were told by the management something to the effect that the business did not comply with the new city order that limits restaurants to a specific percentage occupancy or risk a citation for violation of city rules.

Abbott today announced that restaurants can be filled to 75 percent capacity, but no one is certain whether that applies to the Brownsville lounges like the Palm. At Tuesday's city commission meeting, the health department was given the authority to cite businesses that did not comply with the new city amended emergency ordinance.

The Palm Lounge and other bars and grills serving food and alcohol were closed for approximately five months because of the COVID-19 crisis. Businesses were just starting to venture to open in the downtown area.

(In the photo above, the city health inspectors stand with a city police officer taking photos in response to patrons taking them after they ordered the closing of the business.)

The amended ordinance dealing with contagious disease states that:"The keeping or permitting of any conditions in violation of the Public Health Order to exist or remain on a property, places or in the place of business of commercial entities providing goods or services directly to the public within the city limits or within areas immediately adjacent thereto in violation of this article, is hereby declared to be a public health nuisance, which may be abated by the city manager or designee by restraining order, preliminary and permanent injunction, or other means provided for by law, and the city may take action to recover the costs of the nuisance abatement."

The announcement of the closing – which did not go well with grieving Astros baseball team fans who had just lost to the Oakland Athletics – brought howls of protest from the patrons, but did not stop the inspectors backed by police officers from closing the business.

No one knew at the time whether the lounge would remain closed pending resolution of the citation. No one knows whether the inspectors had visited the few open places and enforced their rules there.

Is this the signal to a new crackdown on struggling city businesses? Was this approved by Mayor Trey Mendez?

but what quickly became clear over the course of the only 2020 vice presidential debate is that Pence, like Donald Trump, thinks the rules don’t apply to him. If this debate proved anything, it’s that the two powerful white guys on the current GOP ticket believe they’re the only voices that matter.

Well you live by the rules; you die by the rules. Go to Mata!

Mayor Trey Mendez sent a verbal request to crack down on all establishments located in the downtown area, "Go and see who is open and close them down if there are patrons inside!". Mayor Trey Mendez is upset that there are not enough pizza-eating Mexicans going to visit his restaurant.

Make sure these police do not BREAK YOUR NECK". like the Mission police did on a male victim, they have no shame showing their murdering hands holding the victim's head with their hands while taking the mug shot of the victim that was beaten senseless. These so called Mission Police Department policemen should be sentenced to death. The Mission Police should be investigated by Fox News as to what police brutality is really like in South Texas. check it our for yourself--Jorge Alejandro Gonzalez was the victim of horrific, brutal, injuries that resulted in the victim to become QUADRILEGIC and then his death.
Where the F__K is our so called REPRESENATIVES? The name of the corrupt so called Sheriff's deputy that along with other co-conspirators was no other than STEVEN FARIAS. This is public record because his name is on the Plaintiff's original complain filed on September 3, 2020. Case &:20-cv-00257 United States District of Texas Southern District of Texas McAllen Division. Steven Farias, Marco Guerrero are the Defendants. We the Citizen of the Southern District of Texas Need justice against such unjust behavior and unjust BULLY of corrupt police brutality. The IMMUNITY card should never be excuse for such bully and injustices. Immunity is bullshit for such burtality. Keep an eye on the Judge who will preside on the case

Harris just proved that she is above the law, when she was asked if the President of United States mandated the everyone should be vaccinated with the covid-vaccine, "Would she take the vaccine?", she responded by stating that if DR.F----=- would mandate she would, but not The President of United States DONALD TRUMP. She showed no respect for higher authority. She bragged and bragged about her being the only one there with such experience as a prosecutor, attorney, and whatever, but she as a prosecutor has tried and convicted defendants for violating and not following the law of the Land that is enforced by the President of United States, who is Donald Trump. Yet, she thinks she is above the law by not following the laws of the land. Joe this and Joe that is the way she referred Joe Biden, as if she is on a first name basis with Biden. I was not empress by Harris.
