Brownsville school board Trustee Sylvia P. Atkinson took the witness stand on Monday — the sixth day of her trial on federal bribery charges.
Atkinson is accused of accepting $10,000 during a FBI sting operation. In exchange, Atkinson had an item placed on the school board agenda and pushed other trustees to support it.
Atkinson pleaded not guilty.
When she took the witness stand, Atkinson testified that she believed what she did was wrong but not illegal.
During cross-examination, new details emerged about a related corruption case that involved Texas Southmost College Trustee Adela Garza.
Prosecutors alleged that Garza and Atkinson schemed to profit from telehealth companies that wanted to do business with the Brownsville Independent School District and other local school districts.
They created a company called "Sunshine Solutions" to launder the money, according to prosecutors.
Late yesterday, Garza acknowledged Atkinson had named her as a participant in the scheme. Garza is currently running for reelection to the board of TSC.

Garza.. what she did to Tercero is coming back to kick her in the ass.. she created a job at tsc for Atkinson so they could hold hands in crime...
Como tu te embarraste con Chambers, Juan?
Since, Adela de la Garza is wife to defense attorney Noe Garza, will Noe Garza have to recuse himself? This is why Nepotism should've never been allowed in the first place.
If you follow BISD, there was no way that you could not have figured out that Adela was involved in some form or fashion. Also, since SPA is so sharp, she certainly was not that stupid to think that she could convince any of us that she knew it was morally wrong but not illegal about it. She is a "lawyer without a title" when it comes to defending herself. She also got to see how easy Baltazar changes his mind (lies) about what he does or does not tell people. Se raja! He has done it several times and those of us that do keep in touch with the activities of the district have seen those lies reversed and in many cases, questioned about it. He wiggles himself out of things. And, now, should we wait for Chapter 2 of the TSC sage? Will it now drag Prisci into the "bola de ratas?" Chapter 3 needs to included La Gringa! She, too, has disappointed so many of us who knew her when she started at BISD and was a good person and teacher. We need Jessica Fletcher to come down and investigate and write a novel about BISD. Until next time, same time, same channel, stay tuned! And as Paul Harvey used to say, "And now, the rest of the story!"
Orale, Juan, keep up the good work. I'd rather wait for your story than to try to make heads or tails of the story that shows up in the Herald. By the way, what happened to Trey's testimony. Another one bites the dust from TSC team and Mayor of the City? What a shame!
A-Ha! Ya esta cantando el pajarito! Vamonos! Todos Pa'l bote por mamones y ratas!
When one domino falls...another one falls and another one falls...It’s SHOWTIME in the RGV! Watch the cockroaches scurry!!
All of these women will get house arrest at Golden corral. Do the crime and do the time at Golden corral. These women cannot go to prison cause they need plenty of makeup. This ugly mess will never change in Brownsville, these women just prove a point, slap on the wrist and don't do it again and still get their jobs back. They have plenty of experience putting their hands in the cookie jar.
I knew it was wrong, but I didn't think it was illegal.
Wow!!!
Can someone really think the jury is that stupid?
Sin Berguenzas las dos ladronas. A la carcel cabronas crimenales y tiren las llaves.
