$250,000 IN CASH, MONEY ORDERS, LEFT IN BOX BY EX-DISTRICT CLERK ADMIN, NEW SHERIFF DEPT. ADMINISTRATOR

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Azteca Valle, KRGV 5-2's investigative reporter Enrique Lerma is reporting that when Ricardo Cornejo left the Cameron County District Clerk's Office to become chief administrator for his former boss and now Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza, he left a box in his former office containing $500 cash and about $250,000 in money orders.

Lerma said that he had gotten confirmation on the cache of loot in the office from District Clerk Laura Reyes-Perez  and said the money orders dated back for more than a decade.

He said county officials could not determine where the cash and money orders came from or whether they may have been payments for county fines, services, or perhaps even child support withheld for an unknown reason.

Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño knows about the discovery of the money, but protested that he was unaware of the find until Lerma confronted him on the matter.

Garza made Cornejo chief administrator of the Sheriff's Dept. and hired him on the last day for applications and before any applicants were interviewed for the advertised position. Garza has been criticized for hiring top administrative personnel and paying lip service to the Human Resource hiring process.

Cornejo's hiring by the sheriff's department as its chief administrator was announced on the last day of the application period while a goodbye party was held at the district clerk's office.

Now, who will investigate the proceeds of the cash and money orders? The sheriff's department?

(After this post appeared, we were informed the case is been handled by the Cameron County District Attorney's Office. We are awaiting a response from that office.)

Lerma says he will have a full report on the story as soon as the Cameron County Auditor's Office  releases its report today.

Garza's first four months on his four-year term have been filled with scandal and apparent malfeasance. A sergeant in the department has filed a lawsuit in federal court alleging massive violations of department personnel First Amendment rights and claims there has been retaliation against them for having supported former sheriff Omar Lucio against Lerma.

He has also been sued by the Cameron County Commissioners Court for unilaterally rescinding a Memorandum Of Understanding between the court and the former sheriff that budgeted the commissioners' courthouse security fund and 15 deputies and bailiffs under Pct. 2 Constable Abel Gomez. He is said to have sent his personnel and ordering them to report to his office and not to Gomez on pain of termination.

This latest scandal comes on the heels of the commissioners lawsuit last week for trying to enforce his authority over the deputies and ignoring the budget amendment process and authority of the commissioners court to place the courthouse security fund under an official of their choice.

Trump will not run for president in 2024.

He’ll talk about it incessantly until then for the attention that it gets, but most of the candidates are preparing for a race in which Trump doesn’t participate.

Republicans will lose again in 2024. Racism sells only to the uneducated and the extremely rich. Not enough votes even if you combine those two.

Fact.

Way to go Eric:
Charles Hoskins: Arrested for family violence

Mark Treviño: Fired from SO and PCT for showing up drunk

Rick Cornejo: 250K of "hidden" money

Robert Gracia: Impersonated a Peace Officer

THE CHANGE WE NEED

Abraham Rodriguez: NO clue on wtf he is doing

Jessica Gonzalez was easy vote for Linebarger Sampson Blair.. blah blah blah. She has been on the outside looking in all her life. She gets a fluke win and people start noticing her, paying attention to her.... calling her even! Do t blame her for voting the wrong way... she is being noticed.... little does she know that Linebarger has a person on staff specifically for that.... catering to people, being a friend, an emocional tampon if you will. You were not the first one to fall for it Jessica.... it’s like all those fools posting pictures for likes and positive comments. You fell for it. At least little Daniela Lopez Valdez has an excuse..... her crook dad Joey Lopez schooled her on how to vote... you were just shmoozed until you got that warm fuzzy felling in your gut.... and voila ..... you went against principal and dice into darkness.... all for some pieces of silver. You would think Mrs. Tipton would have learned from her BFF Sylvia Atkinson... but she too succumbed to evil.... like the green grass on the other side of the fence the cow always searches for... sticking its neck out risking injury..... when will we ever learn? Taxpayers be dammed, this is not about doing the right thing..... people like me now... I’m a somebody by-golly ......

Rick Cornejo who's listed as a civilian position is driving sn unmarked unit. How in the world? He is a liability! And also the other female that was hired as a office specialist is driving an unmarked vehicle as well.
All these jailers are quitting because they are out numbered by the inmates. Another lawsuit waiting to happen. County wake the fuck up and do something.. Get this so called "Elected Official" out of office! Get his appointmented buddies out! County isn't safe! You don't have enough deputies out during the 3 shifts! Cameron County the laughing stalk of the RGV. Very sad.

Question, what does “decades old,” money orders have to do with corruption? They were never cashed. Doesn’t “decades old,” pre-date anyone in the story?

The current Sheriff Administration has their heads so far up their own ass that they seem to think that a few people are against them. I keep reading over and over this administration blaming and listing same names. I hear Javier Reyna, I hear Robert Mata, I hear Abel Gomez.... it really doesn't take a genius to figure out that the current problems that this administration has is far greater than these 3 guys. As a citizen of Cameron county can clearly see that the current administration is self serving, blame others and you and your own buddies are to blame. Look at what you have done to the department in the last 4 months. By your 6 month mark you will have no more deputies or jailers working. And you can't blame the 3 amigos. If that's the case I rather have the 3 amigos running the department if they have that much influence and power.
Garza, Gracia, Cornejo are worthless and clueless of what it takes to run the department.
I feel sorry for the current deputies that have to pretend to Like this Administration just because they have a family to take care of. Watch your 6 at all times.....because your Administration clearly won't.

How did things get so bad at the office? Patrol shifts with no supervisor, investigators being sent to patrol, clerks driving unmarked police units bought with seized money, rookies in charge of patrol shifts, deputies and jailers quitting left and right, federal inmates with only one deputy at the hospital because of lack of manpower (wondering what the US Marshals have to say about this), lawsuits, restraining orders against the sheriff, administrators drinking and protecting Osiel Cardenas Jr at events, there is a no confidence letter against Abraham Rodriguez being signed by deputies..... the only credit Garza is taking is the new laptops in the patrol units and the body cameras, and even that was bought by the Lucio's administration.... it's sad

I heard that all the honeytarys are checking all the closets, drawers, filing cabinets (finally they opened one) and trash cans to find cash they want to go see los tucanes tomorrow.

Does anyone know why Cornejo has a radio, an unmarked unit and a Sheriff's Office jacket? Is he a Peace Officer?
