If you all want to get in trouble with me, you just disregard what I just said and then we're gonna have issues..."With the first pre-trial hearing scheduled tomorrow in one of two (and more are coming we hear) lawsuits filed in federal court alleging retaliation against Cameron County Sheriff Department officials and violations of their First Amendment rights of protected free speech and political activity who supported former Sheriff Omar Lucio against Eric Garza, it is instructive to listen to the audio tape above that caught the tenor of confrontation in the incoming administration.
It is vindictive, contentious, and in-your-face.
Here was Gracia, a former U.S. Customs agent, when he addressed the sheriff's department personnel demanding loyalty to him and to Garza...or else. He claims in his response to a lawsuit that he had been "appointed" by Garza as his chief deputy. Unfortunately, the Cameron County Human Resources Dept. wasn't notified of the new hire and he wasn't listed as a county employee.
In fact, he wasn't even a Texas certified peace officer like they were and it would be mid-March before he was able to pass the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement peace office exam after flunking it on his first attempt(s).
The new tone of the Garza-Gracia administration resulted in top department officers and at least 70 jailers leaving the department seeking more welcoming and greener pastures. We are told more revelations will follow as the lawsuits wend their way through the courts. Will the county's legal counsel move to stanch the bleeding or allow it to continue? Honey works better than vinegar, we're told.)

Leaders lead by example, by not asking a subordinate to do something that they wouldn’t do, by showing subordinates they are willing to take a hit for them even when they screw up and by being loyal to your subordinates. Respect is earned. Once you demand respect and loyalty, you’re done as a leader. Garza and Gracia are exhibiting the kicks of a drowning leadership team.

Those are words from a "power hungry mongrel junkie" and the wrong words for a NEW ADMINISTRATION to direct to its current employees! Its pretty obvious that this NEW ADMINISTRATION is "demanding" loyalty and respect? If this "power hungry junkie" in gracia who was appointed by the "I have confidence in gracia" Sheriff Garza, then he should have used a better choice of words. Why do you think gracia was "despised" by his peers in Customs? Why do you think he had a dark cloud over his head? Anyone with good leadership skills would have used words like, "this is a new administration and we're going to better the working conditions to ensure safety and responsibility. All we're asking is that you give it a chance and if it doesn't work, then we ask for your input to make it work. Its will take time but just ask for all to help make it work. Sheriff Garza and I have respect for your commitment to doing the job and hope that you will return it by making it work." Garza, you need to get rid of this POS gracia OR sit his ass down and tell him to pull his "power hungry junkie" head out of his ass!
