Special to El Rrun-Rrun
Remember all the Christmas bell ringers collecting donations at the Walmarts and other large stores to help the needy?
Or the valley wide collections for Channel 5's Tim's Coats?
The Salvation Army not only has a thrift store in Brownsville, but also receives cash donations from the United Way of Southern Cameron County during their drive to collect from the employees of local businesses, school districts and government employees of all levels (municipal, county and state).
Well, imagine the surprise of one of our readers who said that after he saw weatherman Tim and the announcer said they had collected $50,000 to buy coats at $14 a piece. He called and asked a Salvation Army receptionist in Harlingen where he could pick up coats for his three children."We live in Brownsville," he said he told her in Spanish. "Where can we get a coat here?"
"You can't," she answered him. "You can apply to get them in our Hidalgo County office, or you can go to Harlingen to our office there."
"But we don't have a way to get there" the man protested. "Why isn't there a Salvation Army in Brownsville?"
Unable to believe this, the man called again later and recorded the receptionist's answer. It hadn't changed. Either Hidalgo County or Harlingen was the place to go.
Not only could the receptionist not answer his question, but with Brownsville being the biggest, most populated city in the Rio Grande Valley and having a large amount of donors during their fundraising drives , it would seem logical that the Salvation Army establish an office here to be closest to its potential clients.
As it is, the United Way collects money from Brownsville donors and gives money annually to the Boys and Girls Club in Los Fresnos, but there isn't such a club – or a YMCA – for Brownsville kids. And as for the coats, well, the three kids will have to bear the cold with their old coats which are not suitable for this frigid weather.
"What good is it to give money through United Way and to the bell ringers if very little of it gets to Brownsville people who live in the county's poorest city?," asked the father. "With this cold, we don't think we will send them to school."

Que lastima. Brownsville always gets the short end of the stick! Tanto maldito dinero que recibió el condado y la ciudad del CARES Act y ARP y todo sigue igual. Ojalá y alguien se queje con los federales y hagan una investigación para ver si ese dinero se mal uso!
Brownsville playing the Beggar Card again.
Basta!
(Buy your own fucking coats, like everybody else. And stop donating!!!)

Starvation Army can't compete with all the ropa usada stores in Browntown.
Garbage bins will soon become stores, FOR WHITES ONLY - FWO Inc.
United Way of SCC executives could care less about poor people …they’re only concerned with their six figure salaries, keeping their corporate ‘sponsors’ and supporting their bureaucracy. They’ve had their con game going for years and know how to manipulate the weak minded idiots that support them! Shills for the power elite.
Channel 5 is a big supporter of the same fake ass corporate charities!
🤮🤡👹💩
I grew up POOR, in the Portway Acres area. We NEVER got freebies, my mom would buy us coats from "segundas", I DO NOT support Salvation Army, or any local charities. Sometimes I go downtown in person and give a taco or a blanket to a homeless person. NEVER to organizations that take money to pay employees, pay building bills and do NOTHING to go to Las Prietas, Portway Acres, Cameron Park and actually check poor families. There are families in those areas that don't need anything, but there are also families (that are NOT ILLEGALS) that do need. By the way, what heppened to "Tim's Coats" How come Channel 23 doesn't do something similar for the lower valley?
United way and similar other gimme gimme oganizations directors get paid in the millions only about 5% or 8% of the total contributions are spend on gimme gimme food and other cheap stuff... illegals are not included in their schemes
