WILL BISD HONOR THOSE WHO TEACH OUR CHILDREN?...

The annual budget process has begun at the Brownsville Independent School District. More than $500 million is now up for grabs with various factions seeking their piece of the pie. The largest portion of the budget, 80 to 85 percent goes to employee compensation.

Here are some facts. 

 BISD’s Superintendent of Schools is paid handsomely ($354,128). He is the highest paid among Valley school districts. There are two deputy superintendents and five area administrators who are well paid for their services. They lead a brigade of upper level professionals who should have no quarrel with their salaries.

Then there are the BISD teachers. 

Their pay is the lowest in the Valley. Last year’s budget did them no favors when a projected 3 percent raise turned in to 2 percent convoluted by mid-points, stipends and a formula that did nothing to improve their standard of living. 

It was totally inadequate. BISD classified workers are also underpaid. Local fast food restaurants now pay $15 an hour. By comparison, slinging cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets is a salary upgrade for those employees looking for a living wage.

BISD needs its teachers and classified staff. Their work ethic and effort have gone above and beyond during the two years of the Pandemic. Those that remain deal with constant low morale in the continuation of their duties. Retirements, resignations and attrition are taking a toll on the front-line work force. This is not the time for disharmony in the ranks. BISD needs these workers and should try harder to make them happy.

That means a substantial raise across the board for teachers and classified workers. Everyone else has done well. Don’t worry about stipends or any other financial dole outs. The focus needs to be on making things right for BISD teachers. They will never move up on the Valley scale unless daring steps are taken.

The Budget committee, chaired by Dr. Prisci Roca Tipton with members Daniella Lopez-Valdez and Drue Brown, needs to pay attention to the concerns of their constituents. This group, and the other school Board members, were not elected to be puppets for BISD administration. They were elected to do the right thing.

No one believes that this will be easy to accomplish. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible. The BISD Board needs to step up, show its appreciation and make things right for these undervalued workers.

Superintendents are the HIGHEST paid and LEAST USEFUL employees in ANY school district. They instigate problems instead of being problem solvers. Most have no more than three years in the classroom; they don’t know how to teach. Superintendents are political figure heads who go from campus to campus strutting around like a rooster in a hen house. Then they eat all of your pan dulce in the teacher’s lounge.

No sympathy here for BISD teachers. How many months of the year do hey work? It's an air-conditioned, hardly physical environment. Great retirement! And enough health insurance perks to rid a family of that burden.

A raise?

How about making a dramatic turn in the education of the city's schoolchildren!

All we get from our teachers is an endless whining loop!!!

A couple living the dream driving luxury vehicles and beach front homes and condominiums, Throw in a ranch for Carmelita Rodriguez. MERCY!
Everyone else scraping by trying to stretch that dollar.
With BISD its not what you know, it is who you BLOW.
Things will never change thanks to good old Politics.

The image of BISD's teachers is teacher El Paya Jerry in a fistfight with students. And the cops were not called, the incident apparently swept under the rug by his school's principal.

He admitted it on his dying blog. Paya should have been charged with assault and jailed.

Our teachers are not all that great.

I say cut and/or reduce coaches pay, especially football. They are an embarrassment to the district. Most of them don’t teach shit. Their job doesn’t start til 4 pm. Then they win 0,1 or 2 games and those few victories are against each out, lol

Yes there are some bad teachers… but many good ones. All of us should try being a K-12 teacher for ONE WEEK - it’s an extremely difficult job. Lots of pressure from the standardized tests leaving less and less time for real teaching. If you really care about our children talk to a teacher and ask about their job.

Yes there are bad teachers….but one gem of a teacher can make all the difference in a kid’s life.

My 7th grade teacher Ms. Silvia…. Changed my life.

Excellent idea. BISD should help teachers stay healthy in a stressful environment....
1. Foul language from students: $50,000 dollars per day
2. Negative comments from Adminstrators: $15,000 dollars per day
3. Rumors, envy, gossip from coworkers. $30,000 dollars per day
4. Students not doing work, following instructions: $20, 000 dollars per day

The money earned will be used to hire a stress manager, personal cook and exercise trainer to get rid of the stress produced by students, administrators and coworkers....to keep fit, healthy and young and not succumb to the evils of stress: overeating, depression, anxiety, sleepless nights etc

Fire all the useless administrators and teachers. Hire less people and better teachers and pay them more. The problem is that they want to get paid more and not fired for being useless. Enrollment is going down yet they keep hiring more people. Most of these BISD would never survive in the private sector so they stay working at BISD and we (taxpayers) have to pay them.

What do you do with the BISD with degrees from UTB, UTRGV or Pan American that have very little reading, writing and math skills? Then they get an online Masters and PHD and become administrators. And we wonder why the kids graduate with no knowledge. Private employers can't hire them because they are useless so the end up working in the public sector (BISD, City of Brownsville, Cameron County, PUB, Post Office, etc.). Basically public sector jobs where it's almost impossible to get fired. AND THEY WANT A PAYRAISE? Why don't they quit and go work in the private sector? Because in the private sector you have to produce otherwise you get fired.

What a true test for the BISD school board which is known to only make the stupidest decisions! And that' because they're educated and supposedly make the right decisions for the school district and what it is all about, the STUDENTS! BISD school board SHOULD give all teachers and support staff a raise that can only be appreciated by BISD employees. This would show them that they are the backbone of the district and not the pencil pushers that the administration is? For sure the BISD school board SHOULD not give any of the administration a raise for they make enough money! If they don't like it, there is the door and good luck to them!
Only time will tell and don't be surprised if this goes wrong! Remember its BISD!

Cut the top level fat, big salaries. The freezing of positions is BS. In the past six months, Carmelita has hired her BFFs friends and movidas. The AA Dora Sauceda just got her boyfriend hired and now she wants him to be an Administrator at the main building. Carmelita keeps covering for Dora Sauceda. easy is it for AAs to get whoever they want in. It takes longer or impossible for anyone else to get hired through the regular process. Those Budget meetings are all for show and selfies for Prisci Roca.

Time to Worry about the young children…..too many field trips to places who don’t respect the hiring screeening process and hire out of desperation AND political favors -this jeopardizes the safety of children on field trips.

Time to pay attention. If it happened at our favorite museum—who is working at the Trampoline Parks? the Pizza places? The movies? Bowling allies? ETC.

I know teachers are with them, but predators are smart, and they plan…better then teachers do.

So time to protect our children and make sure where we send them on field trips is safe. And the leaders there make decisions based on good judgement not desperation or political favors.

School board candidates will you stand on a policy that will keep our children safe?

Protecting children is NOT attacking these places…it is ltryign to stay one step ahead of the predators.

First of all, for most of you who aren't teachers and wouldn't last a day in the classroom, TEACHER SALARIES ARE ALLOCATED by/or DIVIDED FOR 12 MONTHS. In other words, for you imbeciles, if they make $30,000 a year, they divide that into 12 months, therefore, receiving a check for every month. They aren't getting paid FREE money in June, July and August.

Also did you know that Texas educators have to have (CPE) continuing professional education hours? Classroom teachers must complete 150 CPE hours. When do most teachers attend to complete these hours? After school and/or during the summer. (without extra pay)

Not all teachers are lazy or pedophiles. Most work hard to educate your children. They even spend their own money for their students. There's so much to do. Their school day doesn't end when the kids go home. Either they stay late working or they do their grading and planning at home. Without extra pay.

The job of a teacher never ends when the kids leave for home.

The Brownsville Independent School District it's not screening personnel we have several people working in our district that have a red flag under tea certificate in order to get higher it's a pain in the butt but we have several teachers with red flags just check out Cummings Career Center look into the teachers that are employed there

Using your example of a teacher making $30,000/year and then dividing it by 12 months is fine. THE PROBLEM IS THEY DON'T WORK THE FULL YEAR. THEY ONLY WORK 8 MONTHS OUT OF THE YEAR.
I work 12 months out of the year and I get paid for 12 months. I wish I could work 8 months and get paid for 12. I don't whine or complain either because I'll get fired but I always have the freedom to leave whenever I want. And I can also get fired if I am not needed or cannot produce. That's what the private sector is like. Try it and see how long you can survive.

Teacher salaries are that, a "salary", they're not paid hourly! They do not get paid overtime, do not get comp-time, holiday pay, etc... What they get, they earn, it is not given to them!!! Their contract is an eight-month employment, their "salary" is divided into a 12-month base "salary".

FYI, they are not given a choice to get paid their full "salary" within the 8 month contract!!! Teachers that work summer school get paid hourly, if they call in sick anytime during the summer, they do not get paid for their absence.

So your argument or opposition that teachers are being paid for not working is uncorroborated and need not say, a reflection of your perfect 💯 IQ Level "Idiot Qualification Level".

3:20pm commenter, a Director Position is already in the bag for Doras Saucedas boy toy, at 21st Century. There are many Coordinators, like myself, that have more experience and years, but this guy just came in and now Carmelita Rodriguez will hire him as Director. Dora Sauceda needs him to get more money. Dr. Gutierrez is also approving extra positions but campuses cant get more help.
