GEORGE P. BUSH'S SWAN SONG IN HIS RUNOFF FOR TEXAS A.G.

George P. Bush came down to Cameron County to campaign among Republicans for the runoff for Texas Attorney General after his dismal performance as Texas Land Commissioner with his handling of the Alamo, the state's premier historical site.

San Antonio media reports indicate that some of the most heated disputes over the Alamo’s redevelopment have involved the question of whether to relocate the Cenotaph, a 1930s monument on Alamo grounds commemorating those who died during the 1836 battle.

The Texas Tribune roughly 60-foot monument, also known as The Spirit of Sacrifice, was set to be taken apart, restored and moved some 500 feet south to the nearby historic Menger Hotel — a move that project planners said would help better mirror the original site. But conservative groups argued that moving the Cenotaph would dilute its significance.

Bush though defended moving the Cenotaph, arguing that it was needed to prevent the monument from “basically falling apart from within,” according to a call the commissioner had with state GOP members and activists. That only fueled some critics already angry over Bush’s role in the redevelopment project.

In the primary election, current Texas AG Kenneth Paxton narrowly missed winning it outright, and  you know how those runoffs turn out only a small percentage of the primary electorate. Paxton has plenty of baggage, but has been very politically popular among Texas Republican for taking the Barack Obama and Joe Biden administrations to court many times, with a better than average degree of success.

In short, although there are a lot of people who like George P. Bush, but they are outnumbered by the people who will turn a blind eye to Paxton's issues and/or hate Bushes, or "Remember the Alamo."

Look at the results: 42 percent for Paxton, Bush 22 percent. Bush is so going to lose the runoff so badly that his appearance in Brownsville was like an opportunity to say goodbye, even though he has good popularity in Cameron and Hidalgo counties, which will be overshadowed by Paxton's popularity across the rest of the state.
