IN WAKE OF UVALDE SHOOTINGS, BISD STAGES DRILLS

 Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Alarmed parents with children at several schools – including Yturria Elementary – have called the school and the man office of the Brownsville Independent School District to ask about the staged lockdown of some campuses days before the end of the school year.

One worried parent said the active shooter drills have frightened the kids who have been kept behind locked doors of their classroom.

She said that BISD Superintendent Dr. Rene Gutierrez had been called and that he had gone to the campus to inquire on the drills.

But BISD board president Eddie Garcia said that the drills – coming on the heels of the shooting deaths of 19 elementary school students and two teachers in Uvalde's Robb Elementary School – is just a precuationary exercise to provide safety protocols in case of an actual emergency.

"No one is trying to stop them (Yturria) or any campus from practicing safety protocols," Garcia, a retired Brownsville Police Dept. officer, said.

"Parents were asking for clarification in regards to a message that was sent by the principal (Sandra Cortez). We are on high alert and and welcome any safety measures to finish the school year safely."

"Our superintendent and his team are working with everyone to ensure the safety and security of our students and staff," he said. "Thanks for asking about this."

Time to step up BISD… because if my children get killed for lack of security due to budget crys im dropping bodies.

BISD has fences, locked doors, security guards and a police department. Now is a good time to make sure the fences are secure, the doors work, and every school is allocated security guards and/or police …..as well as working cameras that ensure campus teams have time to react to threats.

Middle schools lost hall monitors and security guards—-time to rethink those budget decisions. And this summer is the perfect time to take inventory and update lock down drills.

Investing in administration in central office while taking away from campus teams is poor…decision making.

Damn the principle and BISD has no sense of sensitivity. You’re harming the children’s mental health. Sad!

Let's forget about teacher raises and let's secure our schools!!! Let's increase officers salaries and better equipment. This has been an ongoing issue for years, right Joe? Joe is our Savior 😂

Get rid of the do nothing bisd police department including the the stupid chief and used that money, more than a million dollars or more, because the real security are the security officers at the students. This new money will have two officers all the time in the elementary schools, 4 officers at the middle schools, 6 officers in the high schools. The current BISD police are not needed because they are just driving around and don't even direct traffic at the schools. These new security guards will report to their campus and not move around, in order for the students can know them and for this officers to be part of staff. These officers report and support the education leader.
