(Ed.'s Note: The exodus of experienced deputies and corrections guards continues at the Cameron County Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Eric Garza – up for reelection in 2024 – blames the county commissioners for not giving him enough money to raise the jailers' salaries, while commissioners blame the sheriff for flunking Texas Commission of Jail Standards inspections that resulted in the federal government removing its prisoners at a loss of some $3 million a year.
This has led to a deficit of jail guards and with deputies seeking greener – and safer – pastures elsewhere. With a handful of deputies patrolling the county and an dangerous prisoner-to-jailer ratio, is it any wonder that both jailers and deputies seek a safer workplace? Unfortunately, prisoners and county residents just can't pick up and leave, but must live day to day without the necessary protection. Privatize the jail system. Too many fat jailers get rich selling cell phones for hundreds of dollars and even allowing drugs. Wake up! How is it these jail employees live like KINGS? I used to be so impressed with the chef who stole over a million dollars in fajitas. The news made the New York Times too. He dressed well. Had pimped up older (not too old) vehicles. Lots of pretty girlfriends.....but now his life in prison is probably still not so bad as he knows how to work the system Besides he didn't RAT on the others involved in the stealing so that alone would give him rank among the other prisoners.

Deputies are not leaving because of the pay. They are leaving because of the incompetence of this administration.
12 hours shift was promised to us like the greatest invention of the new century. Now, we can't work overtime on our regular work days and we have to do in in our days off which defeats the purpose of the 3 days off every other weekend (not every weekend like it was promised by worthless Dani Gomez). Now we have to eat 3 times on the road, which is more expensive for us. Now, since deputies are starting to leave, we have to cover more areas, which we are ending up with 3 or 4 times more reports. Our so-called patrol "lieutenants" Rivera and Lopez only do social media and school presentations, and we don't have any help from them. Every time we bring this issue up to them, they seem not to care, shit they don't even respond to emails. Ask yourself, Sheriff, do we really need two deputies in charge of the fleet? Why can't gomez take care of that? We can use those two deputies for patrol! Come on, you don't need a master degree to know that. We need someone who can bring solutions and help. Sheriff, you need someone who can prevent this boat from sinking to the bottom of the ocean and for what we have seen, gomez ain't doing it. More deputies with pending applications to small agencies, how many of them are from CID, SIU, or Civil? How many from patrol? That's your answer right there. Someone ain't cutting it and that's you dani boy, time for you to step aside and let a real leader do the job.
