ABUNDEZ SENTENCED TO 60 YEARS FOR 2-YEAR-OLD'S MURDER

(HARLINGEN, Texas) — A Harlingen man was sentenced Tuesday in the killing of a 2-year-old girl.

Jorge Abundez Jr. was sentenced to 60 years in prison in connection to the death of Katalina Castaneda, a news release from the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office stated. Abundez was convicted on one count of injury to a child, with the jury declaring a mistrial on the additional count of capital murder.

On April 19, 2017, officers were dispatched to 1805 S. 3rd Street in Harlingen in reference to an unresponsive child. At the scene, EMS attempted to revive the child but were unsuccessful.

When the child was brought to the ambulance, they noticed bruises along her torso and legs, that were in “various stages of healing,” the release stated.

Castaneda was transported to Valley Baptist Medical Center where she was revived but ultimately died from internal bleeding.

“This was a particularly heinous and outrageous murder. The initial claim that the child fell down the stairs was bogus. The loss of Katalina’s life was senseless. I am thankful the jury sent the message that this type of behavior is abhorrent and will not be tolerated in Cameron County. We will stand up for abused children in our community. May Abundez spend every single second of his sentence knowing that he is experiencing the consequences stemming from his own awful and selfish choices,” Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz said.

According to previous ValleyCentral reports, Castaneda’s mother, Samantha Lee Gonzalez had called police stating she had fallen down the stairs. Her death was originally called accidental, but investigators continued looking into the case.

The heck with 60 years. They should have given him the death penalty. This country is too weak on crime. The sentencing should be equal to the crime.

at least he'll be alive, no equal justice here!

Children are need to be protected at all times.

The problem is there.

They couldn’t convict him on murder because the defense lawyer kicked the county da’s ass. That’s what they get for doing a shitty job. Luis Saenz consistently loses against these defense lawyers. And he even got a “special investigator” Pinche waste of money. All those county da investigators no valen verga. As Chafas as their DA

Way to go Luis Saenz! A mistrial and only 60 years for the death of a person. I thought your office was full of expert attorney's! Are you going to post pictures of this failure on facebook like the other failure Brownsville Police chief Chapo Sauceda??

The CCDA could not prove a capital murder case to a jury? According to Saenz, this was a heinous crime but his office couldn't get that conviction? Pretty sad, if you ask me?
A jury gave him sixty years, wow! This POS has been in jail since July of 2018. Abundiz already has credit on those sixty years! I think the prison time is 3 days to one, or something like that. Do the math!
Was justice really done for poor Katalina?

Once a woman has children she should not take men home. Before she goes out she needs to make sure the children are cared for.
