For the last four years, Texas A & M University Regent Mike Hernandez – a Brownsville native – has been advocating with his fellow Regents that funding cutting-edge workforce training in this rapidly growing region was in investment that would benefit the entire state.
He found out this past Thursday that he had been preaching to the choir when his colleagues on the the board agreed to an amendment to the current system's budget to appropriate between $30 to $40 million to build a 30,000 foot-square advanced manufacturing training facility at the Port of Brownsville.
The facility will include teaching robotics, among other advanced workforce training with the participation of local community colleges and technical-vocational institutions.
And the commissioners of the Brownsville Navigation District, enthusiastic to be part of A&M's incentive, unanimously approved providing them 25 acres of land at the Port of Brownsville at no cost this Tuesday.

"The new building will expand on the tremendous success that we’ve had with our workforce training partnerships with our local community colleges, Texas Southmost College among them, and now we are adding capacity for our university partners to do research and development for current and future industry at the port of Brownsville," Hernandez said.
According to A&M , the South Texas Workforce Development Project is proposed for approximately 25 acres owned by the Port of Brownsville and will be paid for with funding from the Permanent University Fund. It will have both classrooms and labs to provide hands-on instruction. The facility will provide training in manufacturing fundamentals and advanced skills, such as mechatronics, computer numeric control, robotics, 3D printing and more.
“The Rio Grande Valley has the fastest growing population in Texas,” said John Sharp, chancellor of The Texas A&M University System. “It is critical for the success of the region and the state that practical and affordable training is available, and that’s just what this Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service project will provide.”
The goal of the South Texas Workforce Development Project is to develop a technical workforce for in-demand jobs, while stimulating state-of-the-art sustainable practices and advancements in manufacturing through research and innovation initiatives.
The Texas A&M University System is one of the largest systems of higher education in the nation, with a budget of $7.8 billion. Through a statewide network of 11 universities, a comprehensive health science center, eight state agencies, and the RELLIS Campus, the Texas A&M System educates more than 153,000 students and makes more than 23 million additional educational contacts through service and outreach programs each year. System-wide, research and development expenditures exceed $1 billion and help drive the state’s economy.

If you want to be upset, start by being upset at the morons at the city that give thousands of dollars in grants to their compadres so they can renovate buildings downtown. Get upset at the same morons that give exemptions to their compadres from having to pay city taxes on buildings they consider historical but are nothing more than a stupid warehouse on Fronton St. A&M will provided much needed workforce development. Why does SPACEX hire people from the outside? Simple, the workforce down here is not properly trained. The university we had down here was given away to the upper valley and all we now have are "classes."

On another matter, there will be a town hall meeting being held on Tuesday, February 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Brownsville Country Club Golf Course Clubhouse, the flyer posted really doesn't explained the reason for the meeting. However, rumor has it that the city commissioners are planning to sell the public golf course for real estate development. By having such a meeting and not posting the real reason for the meeting indicates that the city commission are planning a behind the door deal with some real estate developer and taking away one of the few recreational activities for their citizens in this community.
Fantastic project. Having access to this training center will only make the PORT of B look better to industry leaders looking to move here. Now the industry leaders just need to increase the hourly wages so these jobs look appealing.
The only way to get a job in Brownsville is through the family connection, HEB, BISD, COB, BND, PUB, WALMART, TARGET, SAM'S, CC, USPS, BFD, TSC, UTRGV, ETC. BROWNSVILLE SUCKS BIG TIME.
Speaking of giving land away, just finished reading article about the richest man in Houston (an oil and gas billionaire) joining forces with Elon Musk in acquiring that coveted land to expand Space X. And guess what? It's seems this guy was an appointy by no other than your governor on wheels Greg Abbott (in lieu of campaign donations) . So if this story is accurate, everyday we get a better picture on how our "Shit system" works. All the shit accumulates at the top and trickles/flows downhill . No wonder the state government agencies and county governments get out of the way and allow these travesties to happen. Not to mention the almighty dollar $$$$. Giving away land? I doubt that! Someone always makes money from these deals. But just wait for the property taxes to increase once again. We need to stop funding the navigation district and colleges/universities. Privatization is the way to go. Unfortunately, Democrats are for giving everything away.
