President Donald Trump took a swipe at Texas Democrat Henry Cuellar on Tuesday, after he pardoned Cuellar and his wife, because the Texas lawmaker is running for office again as a Democrat.
In a post on Truth Social, the president said, in part, "I am fighting him for his seat in Congress."
Cuellar and his wife, Imelda, were indicted in 2024 under federal bribery charges for allegedly accepting nearly $600,000 in bribes from an unnamed Mexican bank and an Azerbaijani government-owned oil company. Federal prosecutors alleged that the Cuellars accepted the payments in exchange for advancing the interests of those foreign entities. Both Cuellar and his wife denied any wrongdoing.
Trump previously called out Cuellar for announcing his intent to run again last month saying on Truth Social in part. "Such a lack of LOYALTY, something that Texas Voters, and Henry’s daughters, will not like. Oh’ well, next time, no more Mr. Nice guy!"
Cuellar’s district, based in South Texas along the U.S.-Mexico border, was recently redrawn to be more favorable to Republicans, heightening the stakes for both parties. Cuellar filed for re-election shortly after being pardoned.
In a lengthy post on Tuesday, the president highlighted his reasoning for pardoning Cuellar and his wife. Trump noted a letter that Cuellar's daughter wrote him, saying it was both "heart wrenching and beautiful."
Trump said that "Being an expert on Political Weaponization, based on what the Biden Losers had done to me, and without having ever met Henry Cuellar, and in particular because of the magnificence of the letter drawn by his daughters asking me to help 'Mom and Dad,' I gave him and Mrs. Cuellar a full and unconditional Pardon."
Trump continued: "In doing so, I never assumed he would be running for Office again, and certainly not as a Democrat, who essentially destroyed his life even with the Pardon given, but he did, and now, despite doing him by far the greatest favor of his life, 20 years of FREEDOM, I am fighting him for his seat in Congress because his views are not nearly as good or strong as Judge Tano Tijerina, who is much more powerful on the Border issue, cutting Taxes, our Military, and just about everything else than is Henry Cuellar."
The president also noted in an additional post on social media that he would pardon Cuellar again if he had to do it "because he was put through a Political Persecution, but he was also not smart in what he did, not respected by his Party, and a person who truly deserves to be beaten badly in the upcoming Election, but not somebody who should be serving a 20 year jail sentence."
In a statement sent to Newsweek on Tuesday, Cuellar's office said, "As mentioned previously, my family and I thank President Trump for his pardon. As a senior and experienced member of Congress, I remain focused on my responsibilities and on fighting for the people I represent. That means lowering costs for families, bringing billions of dollars back to the district, strengthening border security, expanding American energy production, and supporting the men and women who keep our communities safe. I look forward to a resounding victory in November.”
Representative Cuellar on X on Tuesday: "Congress only works when it works in a bipartisan way. I choose to work across the aisle because that’s how I deliver real results for my communities. That approach has guided me throughout my time in Congress – making friends, building trust, and improving outcomes – because it works. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. I’m honored to be recognized by @FoxNews as one of the most bipartisan lawmakers in Congress. I'll continue focusing on practical solutions, cutting through red tape, and delivering for the families of South Texas."
Trump endorsed Tano Tijerina in the election for Texas's 28th Congressional District. The president also noted on Truth Social on Tuesday that "Henry should not be allowed to serve in Congress again."

Cuellar is a DINO. He backs the GOP anyway. Another bootlicker. Throw a stick and you hit one.
