WHERE'S THE BELLS AND WHISTLES FOR TERCERO'S AWARD AND RECOGNITION FROM UT?

By Juan Montoya
Remember the times when Juliet Garcia was given some recognition?
Either she was named Hispanic Woman of the Week, the month, the year, century, millennium, or what not. The loca. Zonta Club would name her their Woman of the year, too, as would the local zoo, various garden clubs, coffee circles or sororities.
In every case, the propaganda machine at the UTB-TSC partnership would pull out all the stops to let the masses of mere mortals know that we were in the presence of  sainthood.
It was also announced this week she was selected for the 2012 distinguished graduate award of the Community College Leadership Program at the University of Texas at Austin and will lecture for the program this April. She was also appointed to a Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board education development advisory committee.
Ok, Lily.
Since the UTB-TSC propaganda machine and the Brownsville Herald choose to snub your accomplishments and relegates them to back pages and passing mention in news stories, we, in our own humble way, will do it instead.

Tercero was the Chief Budget Officer for the Alamo Colleges System before her selection as Texas Southmost College (TSC) president. Tercero became the first strictly TSC president the community college has had since it began a disastrous 20-year partnership with the University of Texas at Brownsville, a partnership that is now coming to an end as TSC becomes an autonomous institution.
She had served as CBO at the Alamo Colleges since fall 2010. Before that she served for 12 years as associate vice chancellor for planning and budgeting at the Tarrant County College District.
She holds a Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Texas at Austin, where she graduated
from the Community College Leadership program.
It ain't the Zonta Club, but what the heck! Congrats!

We can't expect Juliet Garcia to share the spotlight with anyone. Letty Fernandez has been feeding stories to the Herald for years...so the Herald waits to be given the story....often written by Letty or her staff. Time for TSC to get in the public relations game. Can't blame all this on UTB. Congratulations Dr. Tecero...we hope there will be many more awards coming.

I also met Dr. Tercero. I didn't feel the self-serving lie that I feel when I talk to Julie. Quite refreshing.
