We were just kidding when we last wrote that the old ranch house brought from the Laureles section of the King Ranch was Charles Stillman's love shack and quipped that perhaps "don Carlos" used it for more than enjoying the mountain laurels.
We even asked one of his descendants still living in the city if perhaps Charles enjoyed the idyllic interludes at the isolated section of ranch to philander with the quineña señoritas.
We got an indignant response to our query , so it wasn't until a fried called out attention to the newspaper clip that accompanies this post that appeared in the Brownsville Herald edition of of Sept. 29, 1922.Charles' heirs James Stillman (the II?) had a few travails then after he tried to disown one Baby Guy Stillman alleging he was the product of a dalliance between his wife Anne G. Stillman and a part-Indian guide Fred Beauvais. Instead, Mrs. Stillman through her attorneys showed evidence in the divorce case that it was James himself who had philandered with Florence Leeds, a former showgirl and that they had two children from the illicit affair.
With the determination by the judge in the case, Baby Guy retained his rights as heir to the $5 million trust fund created by his grandfather James, the original founder of the City Bank of New York, for him and his two brothers and a sister. Are they related to the current batch of Stillman's heirs still in Browntown?
Many local residents would be tickled pink to find out that their ancestor was a swashbuckling pirate stealing treasure and breaking hearts. In the case of Brownsville founder Charles Stillman, there might be out there in the regions of Kingsville or Kleberg County some blue-eyed quineño who might still carry the gene.

Juan...You obsession with dishing the dirt on the Stillman family is starting to reflect badly on you. It is sounding like envy.
hey anony 351, get over it. stillman was in mexico (durango, i believe) long before brownsville existed. he then moved to matamoros for many years before texas joined the us and he got a chance to create brownsville. he is often characterized as a swindler of spanish land grants. in the case of brownsville and the cavazos deal, however, he did purchase the land from some wrongful cavazos heirs. he was then taken to court and forced to pay the true cavazos heirs. so, from what i can tell over 150 years later, is that stillman was the victim in all of this. stillman was swindled by the wrongful cavazos heirs. now, if he became a swindler later with king, it may have been because he himself was swindled, so i guess he figured, if you can't beat'em join'em.
