WESLACO - The Rio Grande Valley is considered the most corrupt area in the country, according to the latest statistic from the U.S. Department of Justice.
The Valley has the highest number of federal public corruption convictions. In 2013, 83 cases received guilty verdicts or pleas. The FBI since launched their anti-corruption task force.
National Public Radio reporter John Burnett brought the local problem to an audience across the country. “I’ve been working in and out of the Rio Grande Valley for years. I just kept picking up the papers and every time I was down there, I would see another public servant doing the perp walk,” Burnett said.
The most recent publicized case was former Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino’s, he was sentenced to prison for money laundering charges.
(His son, Jonathan TreviƱo got 17 years in prison. The other eight Panama Unit squad members received 10 to 14 years.)
“Anybody who knows Texas knows that the Valley has this reputation that public servants have their price,” Burnett said.
“Sometimes the lure of money, regardless of who you are and how much money you make, that lure, that temptation is too great,” Trevino said in an interview about former commander Jose Padilla who was indicted for drug trafficking.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS reported about the problems of public servants becoming corrupted. Officers admitted they were pressured to commit crime. School board members were forcing contractors to pay for construction bids. Politiquera bribed voters with cocaine.

Hello? So, what's new. .
What's new, finally RGV is on the radar and the honest law enforcement and legal system are going to put some dumb shits behind bars.
The dumb shits have finally been identified . They are our elected officials and some lawyers .As we say in the FBAI, "No shit, Sherlock !
Putting corrupt politicians from the RGV. I will believe it when I see it. Otherwise it's the same old bs.
Brownsville: BISD board, City commission, PUB Board, United Brownsville. Like St. Thomas, until I see it.
They should start with Senator Eddie. Have that crook explain where he's gotten his money over the past 20+ years, and don't accept that "consultant" bullshit. Eddie has zero skills or knowledge to sell as a consultant. His only "skill" is voting the way those who pay his "consulting fees" want him to vote.
This is truly a Revelation ! Ancient Aliens among us earthlings .
No shit Sherlock !
So. Tx is corrupt? NAW. ! Start with the Feds first , then you go down the Scale .
What about Pat the rat ///
