Special to El Rrun-Rrun
In the end - faced by at least two dozen speakers against the tax abatements for LNGs and salary hikes for the commissioners - the court flinched and tabled both.
The commissioners heard more than two dozen speakers tell them they neither wanted them to give Anova LNG, Common Infrastructure LLC and Anova LNG more than $300 million (100 percent) in tax abatements over 10 years or themselves hefty salary increases.
The was a loud cheer when the crowd was told the raises were "off the table" indefinitely.
There was a sizable number of extra security at the court indicating that that the court expected the turnout to be heavy and it was.
"This is your victory," said a speaker to heavy applause.

Democracy in action, great victory for the taxpayer and public in general, wish we could do the same with state and federal govts too AND STOP ALL FEDERAL WASTING OF TAX DOLLARS.
EL RRUN RRUN!!!
Are you sure they "nixed" LNG abatements? Didn't hear that myself, juan.
A, que raza.
Whoever that speaker was who said this was "your victory," clearly has no idea what they're talking about.
According to Montoya's write-up, the commissioner's court tabled the items. Just in case you aren't up to speed with your parliamentary procedure, tabling something doesn't mean it's gone forever. All that means is they've decided to postpone discussion on something. Postponing something means they will more than likely bring the subject up at a later date, probably when the crowd size is smaller, or when the people have forgotten about the issue.
Another stroke of genius by the court was saying the issue was "off the table indefinitely." Indefinitely is defined as, "for an unlimited or unspecified period of time." Again, that simply means there's no concrete timetable for the item's return to the agenda. I'm sure they'll try to do each item separately, or they'll try some other backdoor deal to get what they want.
This was not a victory for anybody. These items were just covered up in parliamentary procedure and will probably return at a later date.
We've won nothing. These items are NOT closed for discussion.
Will open up a tortilla factory and ask for 300 million dollars (100% tax abatements for 50 years and ask for incentives to pay myself a salary of 150k a year. My employees will make 7.50 an hour and NOT work over 40 hours so I don't have to offer insurance and over time just like wal-mark. I also will have this business in front of a city or county property so my customers can park there so I can be exempt from the requirement of providing parking spaces. Also close to a bike trail so I can offer or sell bottle water without a permit since its close to a bike trail permits are exempt. The street name will be changed to the name of my business and hopefully I will be a member of the antiquities and historical cronyism society. At least this type of buisess is green friendly and will not make you FAT firemen welcome.
Please, they always do this. In about one month, they will approve the raises. The people in the picture will always remember the NO. Welcome to Cameron County traditions.
Tower at Milpa Verde. NO. It is there.
Fronton street. NO. It is a new name.
They are going to play possum for a couple of months and then sneak giving themselves a raise. Like sharks smelling blood. They are already tasting it. That is how corruption works. One of them is coming up for reelection soon. Voters need to show they’re serious about their arrogance.
Seems that public pressure was successful in ending the effort by greedy County Commissioners to hike their own pay and "give away our farm" to LNG companies. Their "whining" for themselves has been shelved for the time being, but surely will pop up again. Now the community must do the same to defeat proposed County, City and BND efforts to increase taxes on us all. Citizens should see something positive from our local governments to justify these tax hikes. And, we should seek to eliminate the tax that goes to BND (Port of Brownsville) which should no longer be able to take our money. BND has decreased taxes for several years, and now want us to pay more. It is time for use to lobby to end the BND part of our property taxes. The citizens need that money more than the Port.
I wanted to go but couldn't and i and thousands others thank the people that went today and voiced there opposition these elected officials need to understand that they wrk for the tax payers not themselves thank you again
to the 12:09 poster. Can you show where/how you are concluding BND will raise taxes or where BND specifically wants us to "pay more"?
I see that posted by folks a lot and its being repeated, but find no EVIDENCE of such.
I do see appraisals went up...but the tax rate did not.
If you could show me where to look-it would be much appreciated.
I heard that Eddie and the Commissioners left their cars running in the parking lot.
El tortillero needs to read up on diets and healthy eating. Corn tortillas will make you fat if you eat a big serving and are sedentary, which, apparently you are, since you had the time to write such a long dumb ass comment.. but it was funny, though.
NOT ENOUGH people. The place NEEDS to be PACKED. Next time it goes up on the agenda, lets SHOW UP IN FORCE. Local Republicans, this is a good opportunity to show you are NOT like the orange hair man. Local Democrats, you ARE being just like the orange man. Local Democrats are getting richer from OUR HARD EARNED money. They are NOT serving our community, they are serving THEMSELVES.
Trevino is an attorney, Betancourt has businesses and they want thousands of dollars to sign a paper, give an order for someone else to do the actual WORK, maybe national news should get involved,, maybe Trump news (FOX) should embarrass us NATIONALLY. REMEMBER, VOTE THEM OUT!!!
We also need to regroup and wait for the replacement of these items on the agenda sometime real soon. El rrun rrun I hope will keep us informed if and when it happens right Juan?
We also need to setup a organization to stop these idiotas from coming up with some crazy ideas and to hold them to their word and OUR NEEDS. Cameron county, the city, BISD and the port specially the port and all those crazy boards with their astronomical salaries.

"SARCASM" idiota where have you been dumb pendejo
Wait for the county COMMISSIONERS to out in the Christmas Parade. They will be the Grand Marshals.
County Judge Ediberto “Eddie” Trevino, no relation to Albert Einstein, has blamed fellow Commissioner Joey Lopez, he of local grocery store fame, as the brains behind the proposal. That in itself is not a rare move by Slick Eddie. Meek-minded Lopez is said to be the antithesis of Trevino’s brazen I-Me-Mine personality.
The brownsville republic.
(That’s how he pays for support, he blamed Joey )
Now, after everything is said and done. Who would refuse their own pay raise. SI, QUE NO. VIEJAS!
1:56 PM. APPRAisal went up. Everybody wants to live there. Now, did your taxes increase if so by how much%. Not tax rate.
GO PROTEST YOUR APPRASIAL TAX INCREASE...
This is WHY county COMMISSIONERS want a raise. Less taxes less money for the budget.
AUSTIN — Gov. Greg Abbott triumphantly delivered his top campaign promise to voters Wednesday when he signed into law a bill — detested by city and county leaders — that caps how much local government can collect in property taxes.Under the new law, cities and counties can collect only 3.5% more in property tax revenue than they did the previous year,Previously, cities and counties could collect up to 8% more in property tax revenue a year,Adopt the no new revenue rate’ is all they have to tell a local tax entity and then if they don’t — if they go to 3.5 or 2.5 — the voter will decide if that’s acceptable.”CURRENTLY, MILLION OF TEXANS are fighting the annual increases in the appraised value of their homes, yet few ever show up to the board hearings where school districts, cities, counties and other governments are actually setting the tax rates that increase their tax bills.
Protest info
The law says tax protesters are "entitled on request to a copy of the data, schedules, formulas and all other information the chief appraiser will introduce at the hearing." No charge, but you have to ask.
No backstabbing
An appraisal review board cannot raise a taxable value of a property of someone who has come in for a hearing.
Is this idota with the lopez stores if yes I will no longer shopt there pinche idiota I will now go to HEB or Wal-Mart so will a lot of people that's why these stores are closing down becase of idiots like him in the family

Pendejos that insult other people are using their own unattractiveness and unsatisfactory features, especially in your person's character. You sound like an unhinged lunatic. Please go get some help
Of course they will try again. They only tabled the Annova LNG Abatement issue, not the raises. They disposed of the issue of raises for themselves for now, but no doubt they will try again.
None of us or most of us anyway do not take issue with raises for non-elected staff in appropriate amounts based on merit and COLA's annually. The "Me Too" clause used by local governments in this region is absurd. It reminds me of spoiled children who believe themselves entitled to what other's are getting.
A 40% raise increase, is outrageous
Sofia has honed her ability to distance herself from issues not supported by the constituency while having already approved tax abatement for one of the other LNG companies for county taxpayers to carry that ten year burden. Oh did she slip that by you? Not surprised. She's gotten really good at screwing the people without them noticing.
Trevino thinks he pulled a fast one. It will come back to bite him at election time.
Lopez seems to think we were all asleep or just dumb. He was wrong. It's him who is the dummy.
Transparency is not their forte evidently nor is integrity. Vote them out.
