IT'S NEAR 100 DEGREES IN THE SHADE, WHERE'S THE BUS?

(Ed.'s Note: The City of Brownsville won't include this photo in its application for All-American city designation. After all, it just won't do for the judges to see two people waiting without a bench or shelter in the mid-afternoon sun when temperatures soar to the 100-degree mark daily. If you look closely, there is a woman sitting under a tree along the fence line at bottom left while her handcart is left next to the bus stop sign – invisible in the foliage next to the white post.

Across Old Port Isabel Road, on the right, the man in the white cap is actually standing in the open next to another bus stop sign which is unseen because of the mesquite branch covering it.

Were it not for the plants along the route, these folks would not have any shade. When they see the bus approach – heading in opposite direction – they will walk to the sign and go to their destinations.

The city, rather than spend a few dollars for a bench or overhang for shade for them, instead has spent millions on other amenities for select citizens such as bike-and-hike trails which are but slightly used.

No, it won't do to send the photo above to the All-American city committee even if they will give the designation if the municipality pays the fee.)
