(Ed.s Note: With renewals for November vehicle registrations expiring and due for renewal at the end of each month, annual property tax payments due, and the Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector's Office having been closed Thursday and Friday last week for the Thanksgiving holiday, it was the recipe for the perfect storm on Monday.
The COVID-19 measures taken to decrease the possibility of contagion meant that long lines formed for the walk-in customers and equally long lines of cars to use the drive-though windows which caused a block-long line of cars on the left lane of the one-way thoroughfare at the corner of Levee and Ninth streets. At left, a security guards places traffic cones to direct the flow of cars toward the drive-in windows.
Those paying property taxes in November stood to earn a two percent discount if they paid before December, and Monday was the last day. The Cameron County Commissioners Court is said to be considering the purchase of a similar drive-through facility in the northern part of the county, now vacant. However, no decisions have been made on a building there.
And those motorists in the know say that registration renewals can also be had at local HEB stores, although their customer service centers also experience a rush at the beginning of each month with customers lining up to pay utility and phone bills and make other monthly payments.)
Tax Assessor-Collector Tony Yzaguirre said that since Monday was the last day for the 2 percent discount of property taxes, and also the last day for those whose registration expired on November, the two combined to create the long lines at the Levee Street tax office.
"We don't expect the lines today (Tuesday)," he said. "It was just those things coming together that caused the long lines."

Tyson looked great and fought well, albeit against a fighter who was pretty much in survival mode for half of the fight.
The judges’ decision of a draw was the second-funniest thing of the night next to Snoop Dogg’s weedy color commentary, but the fact that Tyson won easily wasn’t the most important part of this event.
So we have been introduced to the newly successful Tyson, who owns a burgeoning marijuana business and is finally, after decades in the wilderness, apparently at peace in his own skin.
And if boxing is the reason, then he should keep fighting.
Just as long as it’s on the senior circuit.
