The wrecking ball and backhoe are obliterating what once was literally a Model of employment and enterprise in Brownsville and across South Texas.
Founded by business patriarch William Henry “Bill” Putegnat III who died in 2015 at the age of 98 on June 2015, it had provided jobs for countless local families.
Now it has been purchased by the Brownsville Independent School District with an eye to provide a better entrance and an additional 250 parking spaces to complement the $6.5 million in renovations planned for Sams Stadium.
Putegnat, alongside his twin brother Barry B. Putegnat Sr., built the company they inherited as teenagers in Brownsville into a powerhouse in the industrial laundry market in the Southwest.
At its peak, Model Laundry had plants in Corpus Christi , Laredo , San Antonio , Albuquerque and Denver in addition to the Rio Grande Valley, according to Bill’s son Michael Putegnat , a Brownsville resident.

At its peak, Model Laundry had plants in Corpus Christi , Laredo , San Antonio , Albuquerque and Denver in addition to the Rio Grande Valley, according to Bill’s son Michael Putegnat , a Brownsville resident.
“They were connected at the hip the whole time,” he said. “My father was the entrepreneur in the sense that he wanted to grow the business. My uncle wanted to work in the plant. They were different kinds of guys.”
Model Landry and Dry Cleaning was founded in the 1890s by Michael’s grandfather William H. Putegnat II, who realized there was money to be made contracting with the federal government for laundry services at Fort Brown . The original plant was on East 14th Street in Brownsville where the Gateway International Bridge stands today.
Michael’s great-grandfather was William H. Putegnat, son of Jean Pierre Putegnat , a farmer from the Lorraine region of France who emigrated to the United States around 1830, settling first in Mobile, Ala., before moving with his family to Brownsville and opening a pharmacy.
Michael’s grandfather, a successful, well dressed young entrepreneur, died with his wife in the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918, orphaning Michael’s father and Uncle Barry when they were toddlers.

In 1935, at the age of 18, the brothers inherited interest in the Putegnat Company, which had maintained operations and whose holdings included “this little laundry,” Michael said. They returned to Brownsville, attended St. Joseph ’s Academy and Brownsville High School , and set about becoming businessmen.

Who would want to work there? You know one person? Rough long days.
Maybe a new immigrant, huh?
First H-E-B and now Model Laundry - lost under Downtown Commissioner Ben Neece's watch.
Not good for reelection, Ben.
It was reported that Biden won't be signing those stimulus checks that will be mailed! Another clue he isn't really the President of the United States! Apart from that, he's not allowed in the white house and not allowed to use any presidential airplanes. Also, he has his own personal security guarding him and not the secret service. A real President would be answering questions from reporters, but he runs away from them like a frighten squirrel. Hahahahaha! The best is yet to come! There's a big surprise coming soon! I won't say more! Hahahahaha!
The school board complained about Dr. Zendejas spending money on the actual educational buildings from TRE, including the scoreboard, but now they are spending money for a parking lot full of restrooms and concession stands.
Is there something wrong with that picture?
What Is Happening to the Republicans?
In becoming the party of Trump, the G.O.P. confronts the kind of existential crisis that has destroyed American parties in the past.
Puros mamones they had a city contract (no bids of course) the other one charro ass. for 100's of years gringos helping gringos
Property belonged to Eddie TreviƱos mother. I guess being a Counry Judge has its privileges..... Eddie has been trying to dump the property on the school district for years. I wonder what deal was cut there and with which trustees.
Without the Gringo business people, we would still be herding goats.
Eddie Trevino me la pela!
Didn't the county judge own that property?
Enough is enough with wearing useless stupid masks in businesses that are still keeping the mask mandate policy (heb/generaldollar/Target/family Dollar, etc) ! Everybody who chooses to not wear them , let's go inside those stores and not wear them! We live in America where freedom
to choose is a right! We don't live in China!
Who would want to work there? Someone who wanted to be able to feed a family. No welfare or food stamps back then.
@ 6:51 AM
You live in Mexico.
WTF ?
Why is BISD acquiring more property, when they already have empty school houses?
Why don’t they use our city’s big new empty Sports Park, instead of expanding their’s.
Why doesn’t UTRGV rent space at TSC’s empty Amigoland mall, instead of from local private empty buildings?
GBIC’s empty industrial parks, and always trying to buy more.
When will these corrupt real estate deals end Juan?
Who’s the “insider” relator. And what was his commission ?
Eddie Trevino y Trey Mendez
Pinche par de enanos inutiles!

The last thing on the minds of the BISD School Board and Educators is actually educating children. I received a crap education at BISD and the strong tradition of mediocrity continues today.
Marvin Hagler, the middleweight boxing great whose title reign and career ended with a split-decision loss to “Sugar” Ray Leonard in 1987, died Saturday. He was 66.
Wife Kay G. Hagler confirmed the death on Facebook on the verified Marvelous Marvin Hagler Fan Club page.
“I am sorry to make a very sad announcement,” she wrote. “Today unfortunately my beloved husband Marvelous Marvin passed away unexpectedly at his home here in New Hampshire. Our family requests that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.”
Hagler was 62-3-2 with 52 knockouts from 1973 to 1987. He was the undisputed middleweight champion from 1980 to his loss to Leonard at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on April 6, 1987.
Customers Angry Over Bank Delays On Stimulus Checks
Wells Fargo and Chase Bank say they won’t start processing federal stimulus direct deposits until March 17, no matter how early the money lands.

Big mistake you're thinking about cockroach europe
Why not ask Eric Garza, as former district clerk he was responsible and has knowledge of all present and past deeds, leases, gas and oil companies leases, cattle brands.
I wonder if Cati Preses is the real estate saleslady who sold the property to BISD. I can also bet that Sylvia Atkinson had a part on this sale.

WOW 30 years that long?
I now see that it is actually true, Juan. Why do you not publish some of the comments made on your blog? If the comment doesn't suit you, you trash it.
You only write about what you consider proper, and ignore those stories that
you buy out from the main character. You do belong to Fox News, right? Are you related to Hannity?
Juan, to date there have been over 25 comments on this great story you contributed about Model Laundry and the Putegnat family. None of these comments had anything to do about this great enterprise that provided Brownsville and the valley with hundreds of jobs for almost 100 years. Instead, the viewers wrote about the stimulus checks, boxing, and they thrashed local pollitians including ex-BISD officials. This is the same thing that happens to most of your informative and historical articles. I think it's time that you require viewers that want to make a comment to post their names and stop hiding behind the anonymous label. Stop allowing the viewers to lash out their poison, sarcasm, hate and envy once and for all.
CHIEF Felix " El Chapo" Sauceda looks like a cock a roach!!!

The reason people trashed BISD is because this property was bought for the expansion of Sams Stadium. Why do we waste tax-payer's money on foolish things, including the bicycle trail by its side, instead of making sure to provide necessities for the town. A football stadium that is almost always empty, during games, should not be on the priority list.
As for the history of Model Laundry and Landrums and, yes, the Eagles' Nest we all used to visit, has many memories for us, but again, our city does not wish to preserve those historical sites like the little rinky-dinky town of Roma does with their historical sites. Why? Look at our leaders!
Many interesting comments and secrets come out of anonymous comments and people involved don't like it like yourself I wonder why? Keep it as it is sooner or later whatever you want to hide will come out and its going to be posted here.

Roma is smart they call them historical sites instead of giving mony to the owners. Here los pendejos buy their lands at higher prices. As if it was their money. Its common down here.
The seller of the la casa de fraude wants to buy it back but at half the price.
What ever happened to all the plans for that building? Another kick back scheme? There's a lot of those going around!
To 6:31, most of the interesting comments and secrets come from Montoya himself to keep us informed of what's going on. The majority of the anonymous comments are usually hateful, sarcasm, cruel, hearsay, unconfirmed rumors, just plain old crap and for the most part have nothing to do with the context of the article. However, if you enjoy this type of BS responses, go for it.
