TODAY IS LAST DAY TO RECEIVE PROPERTY TAX DISCOUNTS

San Benito News

BROWNSVILLE, TX —Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector, Antonio “Tony” Yzaguirre is once again urging taxpayers to take advantage of tax discounts available to property owners who pay their taxes early.

Payments made in December will receive a 1 percent discount for districts that offer those discounts. There are no discounts for taxes paid in January 2024, however due to the last day of December falling on a Sunday and offices being closed to observe the New Year holiday, the last day to receive the 1 percent discount is being moved to Tuesday, January 2, 2024.

Property taxes for the year 2023 are due January 31, 2024 and become delinquent February 1, 2024 in accordance to Texas Property Tax Code 31.01.

The following tax discounts will be given to those taxpayers who pay their property taxes early for Cameron County and those districts that provide them, in accordance to Texas Property Tax Code 31.05: December 2023, 1 percent discount; January 2024, no discount. Taxes are due at this time.

If a taxpayer does not receive his or her consolidated 2023 tax statement, said taxpayer can view his or her account online at www.cameroncountytx.gov/tac or contact one of the Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector Tax Offices as soon as possible. In accordance to Texas Property Tax Code Sec. 31.01(g), a taxpayer is responsible for his or her property taxes, even if he or she does not receive a tax statement.

The Homestead Exemption is a form of tax relief offered to property taxpayers.

“This exemption grants huge savings on school taxes for homesteaders and individuals over 65 years of age that have a homestead application on file,” Yzaguirre said. If taxpayers do not have a homestead application on file, they can submit one at any of the Cameron County Tax Office locations or at the Cameron Appraisal District. Once the application is approved, a refund may be processed on 2023 property taxes, if the qualifying taxpayer has already paid his or her taxes Yzaguirre explained.

Taxpayers may only have one property as their homestead in the State of Texas. All Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector offices are ready to answer any questions regarding this constitutional amendment, Yzaguirre said

Internet payments allow taxpayers to pay their taxes by electronic check in the convenience of their home or office, over the internet, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by going to cameroncountytx.gov/tac. Fees have been reduced when paying online with an I-check (bank account and routing numbers are needed).

What tax break when apprised values on properties have gone up the roof in taxes. There's no savings in taxes for the elderly home owners? Yes I know that taxes won't go up at a certain age but the home owners must pay taxes. Texas need to change the school districts taxes by charging school taxes on parents who have children in school only. Currently many parents are not paying their fair share of taxes. Homeowners with children will pay nothing. Now will have more parents involved with their children teachers education. Teachers are not going to like working with parents to be more accountable for their teaching methods or nonteaching methods to students.
